    Can anyone answer that?

Recently I was speaking to a few other Celtic supporters and they were unsure too.

For one who uses that particular phrase quite often, I really ought to * know!!!

    Thanks

From the lyrics of the Celtic song is the obvious answer, I suppose, which in turn was written by Mick Garngad. As to where he got the 'hail hail' from
I did once see a suggestion that it was based on a song called 'Hail Hail the gang's all here.'

    http://www.roystonroadproject.org/archive/history/little_ireland_poet.htm

Countless songs about Celtic poured from the pen of Mick Garngad and among them some of the most cherished ones in the Irish repertoire of the terraces at Parkhead. “The Celtic Song” written by him to the tune of the overture from “The Pirates of Penzance” is famous, as is “Oh Hampden In The Sun!” celebrating the great seven-one victory over Rangers in the League Cup. Mick sold “The Celtic Song” to Gen Daly, the popular music hall singer, for a mere fiver, but this is understandable, as ‘cold cash’ was the least of his objectives.

I don't know if it's got something to do with Billy McNeill being called 'Caesar'. It was common practice for the Roman army to hail their Caesar however, Billy McNeill was called after Caesar Romero the actor, not Caesar the Emperor.

I had considered the role of Billy McNeill but had assumed that the Celtic Song was established long before he came on the scene.

Incidentally, it's quite funny looking at the front screen, which shows how many replies and viewings this post has had in comparisons to others. However, that's an issue for another time!

I thought it was written about Belfast Celtic (now defunct) and it became Glasgow Celtic's ?

"The Celtic Song" is the song played over the public address system at Celtic Park, Glasgow when the Scottish football team Celtic run onto the pitch before kick-off. Part of the song is set to an arrangement of part of the tune of "With cat-like tread", from the 1879 Gilbert and Sullivan comic opera The Pirates of Penzance, with lyrics adapted from the American song "Hail, Hail, the Gang's All Here". The "It's a grand old team" section, however, bears no resemblance to "With cat-like tread".[1]

There are many versions of the song. However, the original version, played at Parkhead, was recorded by Glen Daly in 1961.[2][3] To mark the 50th anniversary of the original release, Shane MacGowan recorded his version in 2011.[2]

Versions of the song are sung by supporters of other clubs around Britain, most notably by Tottenham Hotspur fans (since the 1967 FA Cup Final), fans of Hibernian in Edinburgh, and Everton Fans – "The Everton Song" is a more ribald rendition by the fans of Everton.

The lyrics to The Celtic Song do not include the words “Hail Hail”

These words were taken from Hail Hail the gangs all here and inserted at the start of The Celtic Song by the supporters on the terracing.

(PS it’s Cesar Romero - Mick)
