    Didn't Zola play for them during Maradona's time? One of the best players of his generation.

    For me there is no doubt Maradona is in the top three ever but I appreciate other opinions.

    I just think Ronaldo's footballing ability is nowhere near his striking ability which is probably the best ever.

    Anyway that's my last comment on the whole debate as it's always going to be Groundhog day. As in, nothing going to happen from here on that will ever change anyone's minds concerning the two players in the thread title.

    Mind you, I'll admit, I didn't 'get' Messi at first. He made everything look so simple I thought people were totally over-exaggerating because every * year there was a new 6 year old Maradona spotted somewhere. Plus I think there was a new 14 year old Pele in America who I didn't hear about again.

    Once I understood what Messi was doing I was totally blown away. There's so many goals he's scored that no one could. Like the first in the return leg against AC Milan when Barca were 2 0 down. The speed of passing, thought, feet and accuracy is beyond mere mortals.

    I always try to make a point of watching all of Barca's games, providing they don't clash with ours.


    Just to watch the wee man play the beautiful game is a sight to behold, you know you're watching something really special, the kind of talent that dosen't come around that often. There's many great players that have played the game, but there will only ever be one Lionel Messi.

    The only argument regarding Ronaldo as relates to Messi is, is he the guy that leads the chasing pack behind him?

    In terms of stats of course he's right up there, but tbh in terms of actual footballing ability i wouldn't put him ahead of the likes of Maradona or Cruyff.

    I personally think he sacrificed his entire game chasing the GOAT on stats.

    Turned himself from an entertaining maverick to a goal machine because he knew he’d never reach the heights of the wee man.

    The Ronaldo in his last couple seasons at United was phenomenal as a talent, the guy in his last few at Madrid was pretty much a goal poacher and nothing else.
