They do not breed near me but in early spring they filter past in small numbers on their way back to breeding areas.
I fact small numbers of Gannet winter off all our coasts and none breeders often fish together well away from their future breeding grounds.
On top of that Gannets that do breed can fish quite far from where they breed anyway:50:

I told my daughter that you had seen a Gannet good friend, as that's her favourite bird of all time, and told me the same thing as you have said mate. She then laughed at my lack of knowledge of Gannets. I felt like a daftie. We regularly go Bass Rock to see the Gannets. It's one of the most amazing places on earth. There's about 250 000 Gannets alone there, along with all sorts of other seabirds. If you have an interest in birds, I'd recommend it to everyone to go at least once in your life.

wasn't going to post this for the embarrasment but here goes .
on Friday I had to take the work car back to base to be serviced over the weekend , refused a lift as a short walk into the village I would get a lift home from sister in-law . 2 minutes into the walk it starts pouring and for a few hundred yards there is no pavement and its a very busy road with traffic . so im trudging along the grass verge which is black and very muddy when ….. a * badger appears under the hedgerow 3 feet in front of me , * panics and tries to jump over it , trips and lands face down in the mud … it scuttles back below the hedge . * laughing stock when the sister in-law sees me and family when I get home . grrrrrrrrrrrr

Was visiting St Convals cemetery to pay my respects to a good friend, when a hedgehog appeared at the bottom of the hedgerow in broad daylight, and carried on nonplussed about my presence foraging for worms and slugs.
I guess that is why they are called hedgehogs. It looked like a tiny pig on stumpy legs.:giggle2:

I ventured out on the river on Saturday and caught my first salmon of the season.

These early running fish are few and far between so catching one this early is a good boost for the season ahead.

They are also in prime condition...not a big fish by any means but with long tailed sea lice this little male was split fresh from the sea...my camera run out just before releasing but it went away fine.
8 hours fishing and I covered 7 miles but well worth the effort.
