GRAHAM ARNOLD has apologised to Tom Rogic for his Old Firm heartbreak.

But the under-fire Australia coach told Brendan Rodgers and Celtic fans: I’m not the bad guy.

Arnold is gutted that Rogic won’t face Rangers at Ibrox, but he insists he can’t let it happen ahead of their Asian Cup campaign.

He told SunSport: “I apologise to all the Celtic fans that Tommy won’t play. I have also said sorry to him. I have known Tommy for a long time and I feel so bad for him

“Tommy loves Celtic, he loves the derby and he wants to play.

“I know how big a game this is for Tommy — and I have spoken to him three times in the last few days

“I can’t let him play but it’s completely WRONG to paint me as the bad guy in all of this.

“Using Fifa rules, Tom and the rest of the British-based players should meet up with the squad on December 24.

“Instead, I have let half my squad stay and play in the Boxing Day games — but I can’t do any more.

“We love Celtic. It’s an incredible club and we have a great relationship with them.

“I coached Tommy as a kid when he was in Australia and helped develop him.

I understand that he is one of Celtic’s best players.

“I understand this is one of the biggest games of the season.

“But I have to make a fair decision for everyone in the squad — and I can’t let Tommy play against Rangers.”

Rodgers and Hibs manager Neil Lennon both rounded on Arnold after Australia’s December 27 meet-up date was confirmed.

Rogic won’t play at Ibrox, while Easter Road trio Jamie Maclaren, Mark Milligan and Martin Boyle miss the Hearts game.

But Arnold insists his hands are tied and that making exceptions would throw his Asian Cup plans into disarray.

He said: “I would love nothing more than to help Celtic, Hibs and all the other clubs affected by the Asian Cup.

“But the situation is outwith my control.

But if I let Tommy or another player stay, all the other coaches would phone and ask for their players to remain too.

“That can’t happen. We have a friendly with Oman on December 30 and I need my squad.

love big sutton ripping right in to the aussies, love it! also that aus coach should stop playing the victim card, he knows exactly what he's doing - keeping a player from playing in one of the biggest games of the season for a 10 camp to prepare for Jordan. Looks like our relationship with the aus fa as turned sour so we should just let Rogic play against the huns and take a fine.

The key part in this is the bolded part.
He's already allowed other players to do this then he should be told to get to *.
Celtic should insist that if Australia want Rogic then he better recall all the other 11 players that he has allowed to play inside the window.
If not then let him try and take it to FIFA.

    Like * i'll have a word.

Firstly im a celtic fan, and couldnt give a tupenny * about australian national football and dont see why i should be expected to do so.

Secondly... hes missing the biggest domestic fixture of the season so far to play oman... in a warm up game.

Like i said, it is what it is. But that doesnt mean i have either like it or agree with it.

International football is a * joke imo. Dont mind who said it but someone a few posts back claimed it should be respected for the lack of corruption it has comparative to club football... which made me * laugh. Club football is geared to keep rich clubs rich and poor clubs down by rigging the conditions. International football is just plain rigged.

I think you'll find Tom is one of the 11 being permitted to stay and play "inside the window" (the Aberdeen game).

This 'it's our euros' is the biggest load of * I've heard, ffs you're playing the likes of Syria and Palestine. Martin Boyle scoring 2 goals and assisting 2 others in 2 games just shows you the level of the teams their playing. Again, sure let him play in it that's fine- but you don't need over a week to prepare for Jordan. Anyone know the repercussions we would face if we refused to let him fly out on time?

Dont’t see what the big deal a few extra days would make unless worried about getting injured.

No. We are suggesting he could therefore to say he has no choice in the matter whatsoever is just plain wrong.

The Lafferty one was competley different to the hypothetical situation been discussed here. He said he was injured so Narnia told FIFA right if he's no fit enough to play for us he's no fit enough to play for them. That's the '5 day rule.' That's no the same as forcing people who don't want to play international football. Did Sutton get banned for refusing to play for England B? Also if as some have suggested you have to play if eligible why are Ireland trying to woo Declan Rice ? Just stick him in the squad and if he refuses, get him banned.

I agree with what Sutton said but slagging off the type of competition was a joke. Sutton is raging when the English call our league Micky Mouse.

Maybe this will clear things up:

    Article 5
    Restrictions on playing
A player who has been called up by his association for one of its
representative teams is, unless otherwise agreed by the relevant
association, not entitled to play for the club with which he is registered
during the period for which he has been released or should have been
released pursuant to the provisions of this annexe. This restriction on
playing for the club shall, moreover, be prolonged by five days in the
event that the player, for whatsoever reason, did not wish to or was
unable to comply with the call-up.

    Article 6
    Disciplinary measures
    1.
Violations of any of the provisions set forth in this annexe shall result
in the imposition of disciplinary measures.
    2.
If a club refuses to release a player or neglects to do so despite
the provisions of this annexe, the FIFA Players’ Status Committee shall
furthermore request the association to which the club belongs to declare
any match(es) in which the player took part to have been lost by the
    club concerned
. Any points thus gained by the club in question shall
be forfeited. Any match contested according to the cup system shall
be regarded as having been won by the opposing team, irrespective
    of the score

Why the insult? And my point is valid. Until he declares for an association he can't be called up.
