    The Shape of Water

Taken me too long to watch it. Massive Guillermo del Toro fan. Thought it was good but not one of his best. Great performances and an interesting plot.

Not sure anything he does will be as good as Pan's Labyrinth.

    Pan's Labrynth was different class.

Shape of Water is what it is - a beauty and the beast fairytale with the creature from the black lagoon. If you go into it, accepting that is what it is, then it does make it easier to connect with. Cant comment on the visual aspects to it, but its the performances that kept me hooked. Sally Hawkins and Octavia Spencer both were very good, but Michael Shannon was the standout.

Definitely didn't think it deserved the Best Picture Oscar though.

I haven’t seen all the nominees for Best Picture last year but I definitely preferred Three Billboards and even Dunkirk.

Agree with you in regards to Michael Shannon. He tends to be the best thing about any film or TV show he’s in. Fantastic actor.

Mortal Engines - I read the book when I was a teen and enjoyed it, so I was looking forward to this coming out. Reading the book helps pick up detail much faster, than you would just watching the film alone. Overall it was a good adaption of the story with a lot of intense drama towards the end.

Felt very much like a comic book coming to life. Plenty of humour and action in what is an origin story (of sorts). Plenty for fans and casuals to enjoy, and while i can't speak to the visuals, my daughter loved the blending of the various forms of illustration within the animation.

    The Ardennes 8.

Was surprised how good this was, starts of as a kitchen sink crime drama set in antwerp, then goes full pulp fiction mode.good acting throughout. And crazy but good soundtrack. They dont make enough movies like this.

Aquaman - Granidose, extravagant and thoroughly entertaining.

Rubbish. The story is dire, the writing is poor, it's boring, overlong, and not in the least bit funny/ They try to riff on old 80's cliches. references and music, and yet still managed to utterfly fail. Could easily cut 45 min and it would still be too long. My daughter wanted to see it as a fan of both John Cena and Hailee Steinfield, and even she was relieved when it was over, and apologized to me afterward for having had us endure this trash.

    Old Man with the Gun

Eay nough film to be able to enjoy. Based on a true story of a rather remarkable criminal career, Robert Redford made it feel completely effortless and natural, as did Tom Waits and Sissy Spacek and all of the support cast of characters. Decent watch and at 90min does not outstay it's welcome.

    Creed II

Having not seen the first, and for that matter, not watched any of the Rocky movies since I was a kid, I found this quite good. Not that Im a boxing fan, as in truth I really don't like it, but its because of the characters and the ability to become invested in them, both protagonist and antagonist, and all those around them. Would recommend, even for those, like myself. with no interest in boxing as a sport, it's still a worthwhile film to sit through.

    Tulip Fever

Am a bif sucker for any sort of period drama, but this is a bit of a mess. This film is st in Amsterdam in the early part iof the 17th century, set amid the frenzy over spculation on tulip futures. It is at it's heart. an interesting premise but does struggle with what it is as a film. A romance, a ruse, a comedy of errors and tragedy of intentions, without actually being any of them with any real satisfaction, amid the lunacy of the strange but true speculation, all for the sake of beauty.

    The Big Lewbowski.

Seen it a few times over the years, but no really sat and actually WATCHED it.

Well today I had the blessing of a couple of hours to myself and seen it on Netflix, put in on.

Few brilliant moments from yer man Jeff and big John Goodman, but apart from that (and getting to see Juilianne Moore in the scud) it was pretty pish.

Never actually realised how pish a film it is.

Wean's away to sleep now, saw Riddick there on Netflix, have seen Pitch Black and the Chronicles of Riddick, never knew Vin Diesel made a 3rd Riddick up until now.

Btw, I'm only half way through and it is one pile of *. Total Vin Diesel wankfest. Avoid.

First time I’ve seen it...could be a bit dull at times but some great acting .
    Great twist at the end.

Watched that the other day, definitely part of the Christmas film routine now but I wouldn’t go as far as 10/10.

That’s scaled off of Home Alone 2, the best of them all!
