    It's not the "The best player in the world" award, if it was Messi would pick it up by default, it's essentially a POTY. Some of the voting criteria is (or was when FIFA ran it) is conduct on and off the pitch ffs!

    Modric had a phenomenal 2018, he deserves to be in the running with the usuals. I really don't see the problem, Messi isn't the only person eligible for this award despite what those on here would make you think.

    It's good IMO to see someone else win it, especially someone like Modric who is absolutely one of the best in the world.

    Messi had the best year stat wise and we won the league at a canter , and he isn't even in top 3 I think that's why people are annoyed.

    I think individual awards for a team game are daft myself and I personally don't really care but a lot of players seem to care about it more than winning a league or a CL which is mental to me.

    Messi is a forward, that's like saying defenders aren't eligible, a defender is never going to have any sort of stats to compare with the likes of Messi/Ronaldo - This isn't the best assister and goal scorer award.

    Of course Messi's stats warrant any award going in the game, but it's an award open to all positions and Modric's contributions in winning the UCL and captaining Croatia to a World Cup final make him an obvious candidate for the BDOR.

    I reckon that would have put up the numbers other than Messi would have won the award easy though.

    I can see why Modric won it don't get me wrong but did he perform better than Messi or Ronaldo? Probably not.
