Some potentially exciting ties in there assuming we don't mess up in the playoff.

    Leverkusen
    Betis
    Zurich or Prague

Would be a nice group. Good away trips (if your wallet can handle Zurich). Challenging but in with a good shot of beating each of them, assuming we sort the defense out.

Far too much of a measured, optimistic post mate.

You sure you're on the right forum ?

I'm not sure that I was so measured and optimistic last night.

That's politics though and I agree. But in terms of reality and the situation we're in, where we had a chance to strengthen, didn't, and paid the price, we deserve what we got.

Wading through all that if we qualify we could feasibly have a group of...

    Seville
    Fenerbahce
    Spartak Moscow

Plenty of other dangerous teams kicking about pot 3 and 4 never mind pot 1

This competition is tougher than folk make out and it’s very long winded as well, we need to be at it come September with much improvement if we are going to make any dents in it

we could get Ajax (if they're pumped out of CL by Kiev), Legia and Rosenborg. All affordable (except norwegian beer prices i'm guessing) and away trips without really long journeys.:60::fear:

If, and it's obviously a big if, we got some defensive re-inforcements i think we could finish second in that group, Spartak and nothing special and i think we could challenge Fenerbache.

Well that’s certainly up for debate but that would be a particularly unkind draw conspiring against us but the way our luck is at the moment I wouldn’t rule it out, there’s also the likes of Chelsea, Arsenal, Besiktas, Marseille, AC Milan, Sporting Lisbon kicking about....also * Ajax could land up in it * forbid, had more than enough of I can handle of them

....more to the point is WE are nothing special, if we are at it I agree with you 100% but * knows what shape the team will be in come a possible Europa League campaign in September

If we go into it with the current team then we'll be lucky to finish second, that i agree with. We are excellent going forward and have a solid midfield, albeit with not much in the way of depth there. We are 3 defenders (2 CB'S and a Right back) and maybe another CM from having an excellent team, but by the end of the window we'll of signed Arzani and possibly one new CB and call it a day. Hope i'm wrong because we have the potential to make the last 16 with the right recruitment.

It is 40 million was bare minimum in CL.... El is about 24 million maximum if you add tickets ands getting 4 group wins and winning the group so if we say sold boyata for decent money and finushed top of the group with four wins then the difference in money isn't a big loss bring a cb... Considering we haven't spent this window in the grand scheme of thing will still be pretty good financially

I'm pumped for the Europa League. I think the Champions League qualifiers left a bitter taste in the mouth because of how and why we went out. I think we allowed AEK safe passage gifting then goals in both ties and we have had poor recruitment in the last two windows.

We have time to get new faces in and we can do some damage in the Europa League. There are some really decent teams in the competition.

It's the first 'failing' we've had at Celtic for the last 2 and a bit years under Rodgers. Navigating two out of three Champions League qualifiers ain't bad.

If we fail to qualify for the Europa League, commence meltdown.

I believe the club needs to make a statement in the EL. No point flying banners in the CL games if we don’t prove a point to UEFA that we ARE a European quality team (albeit a growing one?).

But the less said about the inequality of the CL - money is * I’m afraid.

There are clearly players at the club who could do with a bit more European experience, handle the pressure, the expectation and not be demoralised by heavy CL group defeats?

We should be able to compete better at EL level and still win the league comfortably.

Yes, comparatively, the money isn’t great, but for me it’s about more than that - the money is just a bonus for good performances and advancing through the tournament.

I’d love to see us qualifying for the CL next season with a strong showing in the EL and with a group of far more confident and experienced players (obviously, with a few new class additions!).

Doing well in the EL will certainly not be a bad thing when it comes to recruiting new players either. It gives players/agents more to consider when weighing up offers.

So I sincerely hope the Hoops give it their all and bring back some European respect and dignity.

You could get a really good competitive group

    Worst Case for me

    Sevilla
    Dinamo Zagreb
    Standard Liege

    Best Case Scenario

    Anderlecht
    Malmo
    HJK Helsinki

We are finshing top of that section!

Nice injection of reasoned optimism from @El Capitan.

As much as missing out on the Champions League (and the moolah) is a disappointment and that our recruitment has been a shambles...the Europa League provides us with an opportunity to enjoy football more at the level we're at and we'll hopefully get at least 1 good away trip out of it.

Bit of a pain for loads of league games to be pushed back to Sundays now, pish if you're wanting a drink before and after a game and have work the next day.

The board have to price this wisely. It's depressing to see so many empty seats in these Europa group games, doesn't feel like a proper European night at all.

Lawwell probably wants Arsenal or Chelsea so he can bump the price of the package up, those 2 & AC are the only sides we're realistically going to sell-out against.
