[Matchday] Celtic (4) v Standard Liege (1), Friendly, Sat 14 July 15:00

Magnificent first half from Celtic. Showed no fear, and played with the confidence of a true Champions League team. Great second half from our 2nd eleven, showed great skill against a much more experienced team. All in all, we are soo much improving under Brendan. Really looking forward to this season. Hope Steven from Ibrox was watching !

 

We need a right back and centre half as we don't have that quality coming through..

We are good in most other positions though..

A winger has to be quality (wow factor) with Forrest, Sinclair, McGregor, Edouard, Morgan and Johnston all able to occupy, as well as KT..

Central midfield I'd get rid of Bitton and Allan and bring 1 in there still..

 

Sinclair was okay and Kouassi was half decent (as always) Compper looked decent aswell I thought apart from one badly mistimed tackle.

 

Does anyone else think Ntcham isn't doing enough of the basics very well......I've watched every game since the team started back and don't really like his over casual approach....it appears to me that he isn't playing with the same level of intensity as the others and seems pretty wasteful on the ball ......I feel we need more effort from him in midfield as it's where we show our strength and composure from and, as we know, he can be great in there when he's on his game......big hopes for this player but I feel he doesn't apply himself in all games

 

I think he is a confidence player and once he gets up and running with multiple games under his belt you will see the ntcham who was different class for us in the 2nd half of the season. Remember it's only pre season. One thing I will say is ntchams delivery from corners is poor, don't know why Rodgers persists with him taking them

 

McGregor was taking the corners yesterday

 

I agree about Ntcham, last year in some league games he was lazy as * then against the huns etc he was everywhere. Same with Dembele against the smaller sides.

Obviously a friendly, but was this a full strength Standard Liege?

Believe they finished 2nd in Belgian league last season, a league ranked 9th in UEFA.

Saw someone on Twitter who reckoned they would be a stronger team than any we'd face in the qualifiers. I have no great knowledge of European teams beyond whoever we've played in recent memory, but my sense is there are probably gonna be at least a few teams in rd 3/4 with more quality.

Feel we went about that game in a serious manner ,there was no hint of friendly about our attitude , sure i heard they are a week or so in front of us in preparation for season ,if so then that was impressive from us even if they took it more as a friendly .

 

That was their first team for most of the game. Player wise they are valued more than us , but that is due to scottish football being criminally underated. As for their ability i would say its pretty close but celtic would edge it , by all accounts they are very good team. This is a cracking result if im honest and to put it in perspective Alashkert are valued at 1/10th of Standard Liege.

Interesting info above regarding Standard. Was curious myself about where they came in their league, etc but never got around to googling it. Seems they are of a pretty decent standard (pardon the pun) and we gave them a bit of a pumping in the first half while still missing players. Good stuff!
