Antalya: There's no bigger shop window for players than the World Cup, but Tom Rogic had no desire to be one of the mannequins in Russia.

The Socceroos attacking midfielder was not looking to use the tournament to attract enough interest to land a big-money move to the English Premier League and had no hesitation in committing his future with Scottish champions, Celtic, before going in to camp.

Rogic is set to start as Australia's first-choice number 10, operating at the fulcrum of the attacking set-up and will be best placed to steal the limelight should Bert van Marwijk's side clinch surprise results against France, Denmark or Peru.

However, three days before beginning Australia's pre-tournament camp, Rogic signed a bumper five-year contract extension with Celtic, despite being heavily linked with a move to English Premier League club Southampton. While most players delay any club decisions until after a major tournament, Rogic said he was not interested in leaving Glasgow yet.

"I am happy at the club, I am happy with where I am. The club made me a great offer and I think I played my best football there and I’m working under the best manager I’ve ever worked under," he said. "I feel as though it’s a great place to be to continue to become a better footballer. It’s a very simple decision and it happened quite quickly."

Rogic cited the influence of Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers as a factor in his decision to commit his future before the transfer window opens on July 1.

"I think working under him is very intense," Rogic said. "He challenges you every day and certainly doesn’t allow for anyone to become complacent or rest on what they might have achieved in one moment. There’s always the desire to achieve more and become successful. He’s challenging me and I feel as though I play my best football under him, and hopefully I can continue my progress and development to become better."

There have been calls for Rogic to move to a stronger league but there are few options available for him to move to a club bigger than Celtic. The pressure, the support, global reach and prestige of the club weighed on his decision.

"I certainly understand what it’s like and the magnitude of the club. I’m very happy there and we have worldwide fans and I’m sure there’s a lot of people in Australia who understand that," he said.

"I can’t control speculation that’s out there. I guess you take it as a compliment maybe, that you’re doing something right. For me I was focused on my job at my club and I am very happy there.''

FRANCE boss Didier Deschamps has singled out Celtic ace Tom Rogic as Australia’s danger man ahead of their World Cup showdown.

The 1998 winners will meet the Socceroos on Saturday in both nations’ opening game of Russia 2018 in Kazan.

France are among the favourites to win the tournament, with Australia facing a huge fight to qualify from their Group, with Denmark and Peru also in it.

And Deschamps – who led his country to the quarter-final of the last World Cup and the Euro 2016 Final has admitted he’s wary of Hoops playmaker Rogic.

He said: “Australia used to be a defensive side, but they have changed that and now have an attacking threat.

“I am concerned about their strength going forward – in particular Tom Rogic. They also have Andrew Nabbout, who is an exciting player.

They are well organised and can be an aggressive team.

“We have completed our homework on them. It’s a very difficult game against a team who will work very hard indeed.

“I have told our players to be careful about the attacking threat Australia undoubtedly pose.”
