It wont go ahead unless he meets the 100k goal, which is a bit ambitious, hope the word gets out there to the masses so they can donate to the campaign, this is a rare opportunity into the mind of one of the greats and true celtic men.

Paul McStay was so good. Wouldn't have been out of place in the modern game. :notworthy

I take it footballers don't make much money from biographies unless they're very high profile like Roy Keane who also doesn't mind being a * to cause controversy which sells books like hot cakes. Celtic offered him the job, I don't think so Roy. Fergie taught him that. Don't think that's in McStay's nature.

He should maybe make a digital only version so he doesn't have to pay for the printing. Though a big chunk of the £100k was for the ghost writer?

Did Keane get Paddy Doyle? That would probably be a good read.

My favourite player when I was but a lad. 1988, my favourite year! Could have played anywhere at his peak but loved the Hoops. Rumours were that Inter Milan wanted him.

He's the perfect role model for the Tierneys, Ralstons et al

    So the book never materialized?

Bizarre way of going about it anyway.

Surely he could have just got a normal book deal?

Always has been my favourite player, which I guess is not uncommon that a player from when you were a kid always will have a very special and unshakeable place in your heart. But it was the sheer character of the man, who really had to be the focus of the team and support, when the club itself was on shaky ground before Fergus McCann, and so much of the team (apart from Collins, Boyd, Elliott and maybe one or two others) the rest were pretty dross in the early 90's.

As much as Scott Brown has secured his place in the history of the club for being the most successful captain since Cesar and a trophy laden career, circumstances have certainly helped that in a way that McStay never really got, especially in the second half of his career, it's interesting to ponder if their respective careers were switched, for instance.

It's also an eery echo that the fortune (or misfortune, as you see it) of the McStay family to having to be the beacons of hope, icons for the Celtic support, and in many ways be the rallying point in dark times, as it was largely what happened with both of his great uncles, Willie and Jimmy, when they were the club captains in turn in the 1920's & 30's and obviously during WWII, when Jimmy was the manager also.

It's definitely unfortunate that he never lifted more silverware, he really deserved it. Despite the financial and emotional turmoil of the barren years, he always maintained his dignity and class - a true ambassador for the Club.

A player cut from his own mould. I wish he was at Celtic in some coaching capacity, he would be a fantastic role model.

    Totally agree. :50:

As for coaching though, I don't know. He never really expressed a desire to carry on with a career in football. Even when he was still playing I remember articles about him being involved with and sponsoring/supporting programs designed to help players adjust to careers and life beyond football. Especially young guys that never quite make it, or those unfortunate enough yo have to retire early as so many turn to drink etc.

The fact that he founded his own IT company, which was a massively growing market in the late 90's and subsequently has moved his family to Australia underlines just how complete he felt his career in football already is. Just a quiet and dignified guy wanting to do what's best ofr his family and not sucked in to seeing his name contantly in the press etc.

In a way it makes me even more respectful of who he is as a man, and not just for his prowess as a footballer.
