    I just don't see him choosing an audience that many would be supportive of the British army to make this stance. Surely he would not choose to antagonize a large part of his audience in the middle of a concert

    Saturday night in Trafalgar Square, London. Four iconic lions flank four iconic Dublin lads as they take to the stage at one of the world’s most famous landmarks. They are Bono, The Edge, Adam Clayton and Larry Mullen jr.

    They are U2, one of the greatest rock bands in the world – or THE greatest as Dublin TV Presenter Laura Whitmore introduces them earlier at this MTV organised event.

    And while they may be in Trafalgar Square – with Admiral Nelson surveying it all from the top of his column – winning the hearts and minds of the 7,000-strong audience is no battle. It’s not even a skirmish. This we-can’t-believe-our-luck crowd – the tickets were free, and won in a ballot – are going wild.

    It’s Armistice Day in Britain, when the fallen of the first World War are commemorated, and to the astonishment of some Irish in the crowd the band begin the night with Sunday * Sunday, which Bono dedicates to the military “and all who lost their lives”.

    Earlier, talking to Irish reporters in a nearby London hotel, guitarist The Edge revealed he was wearing an enamel poppy on his lapel. (He also spoke about the Paradise Papers, saying he understood people’s anger at the system.)

    Would be interesting to know who is promoting this piece. Sounds like a slight propaganda angle. "astonishment of the crowd." For me, hinting at the fact the words are there to highlight the military's injustice and murder in Derry. Listen it could be straight up being cuntish. But I'll reserve judgement on this one.

    I find it hard to believe that the enamel poppy bit is not true.

    U2 are always a band for a big occasion. Accepting a Global Icon award from MTV by playing a concert in Trafalgar Square, the Irish rock superstars turned it into a Remembrance Day celebration of peace and unity. Bono wore a frock coat, apparently in honour of the Admiral on top of the column, but he had an Irish tri-colour flag tucked underneath it lest his countrymen questioned his loyalties. “No one loves peace more than those who've fought for it,” announced Bono, dedicating Sunday * Sunday to the military.

    Rocker Bob Geldof is furious about how Sinn Féin dealt with his decision to hand back the honour of the Freedom of Dublin.

    Last month, Geldof handed back his freedom scroll in protest at the inclusion of Myanmar leader Aung San Suu Kyi on the honour list. His action was to highlight the genocide against the country's Rohingya Muslim population, which Ms Suu Kyi, once thought to be an advocate for human rights, has done nothing to stop.

    However, at the time he said the freedom of the city meant a lot to him and he hoped a way could be found to remove Ms Suu Kyi, so that he could remain on the list.

    On Wednesday night, the council first voted to remove the Myanmar leader from the list of people with freedom of the city - then voted to also remove Geldof from the list.

    ouncillor Mannix Flynn, who helped Geldof with the process of returning the honour, said the singer was furious with how the Sinn Féin-dominated council had dealt with the matter.

    In a statement to RTÉ Radio One's 'Liveline' yesterday, Geldof said he was "absolutely disgusted" about what happened at the Dublin City Council meeting.
    :56::56:

    "He made it clear if Aung San Suu Kyi was removed from the freedom of Dublin list, he would be more than honoured to stay as a Freeman of Dublin.

    "And he also said, and I'm getting garbled but, 'this is a Sinn Féin stitch-up' and they have an agenda which was anti-Bob Geldof, things he said about the 1916 Rising."

    Dublin Lord Mayor, Micheál Mac Donncha said the allegation it was a Sinn Féin stitch-up was "nonsense". "The council voted, it wasn't a Sinn Féin vote. We simply confirmed what Bob Geldof himself had done," he said.
