I was at a stag in newcastle last night so I got the train down with the celtic fans and ended up out with a lot of them at night.

Firstly, between ladies day at the races, and the celtic game, newcastle town was absolute carnage. Fun but an utter disgrace. It really hit home the problem we have with alcohol as a society.

The celtic boys on the train and at the station with me were good natured but half of them were already smashed to the point of having squables with each other and the police. This was around half 1. By the time we were back from the races around 7ish people were ruined so it did not surprise in the slightest to hear there was bother in sunderland.

In the town centre i didnt see a bit real violence but between the football fans and the racing "ladies" and "gentlemen" people were being scraped off the ground, falling asleep in bus shelters, and * in every corner they can find. There was hardly five minutes when you didnt hear an ambulance siren or see police getting involved with drunks.

So while I dont believe celtic fans went looking for trouble, nor sunderland fans outwith the EDL chumps, we have a real problem when people cannot look after themselves because of drink. It almost inevitably leads to bother where rivalry exists and it only takes a few arseholes to trigger a reaction from hundreds of drunks to start something. Fans really do need to wise up a bit and take some personal responsibility.

You were at a Stag Do and you spent your time worrying about society's alcohol problem? Get a life.

Also, you spent your time out 'with the Celtic fans' peculiar terminology from a 'Celtic fan'.

No, I only thought about it after I heard about the trouble. As I said it was a fun night. My point is that trouble was always going to be likely when people are out of control before a game even kicks off.

How were the Celtic fans for company? Doesn't sound as if you've hung about with us before.

Alcohol and fitba have gone hand in hand for decades. It used to be a lot worse than this ffs...I wasn't there but my old man has told me enough stories about away trips to Easter Road and Tynecastle in the 70s:56:

Some people might go over the top but nothing is going to change that...always going to be there.

Much worse. The pub licenses my da said meant they'd get rat arsed with carry outs wherever they went and stocked up for shutting time's say for when the buses left Aberdeen and the likes. Taking booze in the grounds..

The release of the weekends from work and watching your team with your pal's away from home on the swally is what it's all about..

It'll never die out, and nor should it..

The point that @Sween is making that it is endemic of a larger social problem. And it is a good one, irrespective of if people are saying it was much worse 40 yrs ago or otherwise, the problem has not gone away and people do have to take some level of personal responsibility. Alcohol effects people differently and unquestioningly there are those who cannot handle the effects of being on the sauce causing scenes like the ones he was describing - and note, not exclusively due to the football, but of other events in the Newcastle area that day.

Of course there is a social element here, where people like to have a few bevvies witht their pals and all, but getting to the point of writing themselves off or losing complete self control, being confrontational etc, and often enough missing the point of why they were out in the first place - be it football, the races, a concert etc.

I remember going into McDonalds in Milan 07. Young guy in the hoops, no more than 17 fell flat on his face and a bottle of Bucky came out of his coat and smashed everywhere. 11.30 in the morning. I was embarrassed for the lad and whoever he was with. There were people falling drunk all over. Didn't look great.

Just seen a video from Saturday of about 20 , maybe more ,of our fans, singing about Lee rigby. I'm as pro IRA, anti Brittain as anyone, but that's bang out for me. We have some real scumbags in our support.
