    His net worth would be the value of the stock, which is said to be 70 dollars. He's lost that amount (plus the 30 dollars).

    By your logic, if you buy a lottery ticket for £1 and win £100 million with it, the ticket is still only worth £1 and that's all you've lost if it is stolen.

    Then uses stolen £100 to buy £70 and get £30 change


    The shopkeeper didn't get the £100 back, that was used previously for another purchase by somebody else so he has lost the £100

    It's a £200 loss all in
