    Wow, what a beautiful contradiction.

He did exhibit the typical anti-Irish racism that is common among British liberals.

His narrow view of the world - and the conflicts in it - was always viewed through the simplistic prism of "religion". It's a common trait among British liberals.

He made me ashamed to be an atheist, as do others of his ilk such as Sam Harris, Richard Dawkins etc.

    Only British liberals?
I have no real interest in his views on anything other than religion. I do not agree with much of his politics at all.

No, not just British liberals. I only cited them as Hitchens was very much an icon of the so-called enlightened British liberal tradition.

Though I don't believe in any kind of divine being or power, I'm not a fundamentalist atheist like Hitchens. And by that I mean, I do not allow my atheism to dominate my politics or my outlook on life. To me that is as authoritarian as those far-right evangelical Christians who can justify just about any prejudice by reference (usually selective) to scripture.

Yes, i understand that, but sometimes a good speaker like Hitchens is important. Atheism needs spokespeople, if no for no other reason than to allow those in the wilderness or in doubt, to know that they are not alone.

But people like him make atheism seem like a religion or a cult. I think he and others like him, do atheism a huge disservice.

I thought his brother Peter had died at first and then seen the date of the thread from 2011, strong bump. I can watch Christopher Hitchens videos one after another on youtube for a few hours as he was such a powerful speaker and his put downs were legendary. He's not someone that I agree with on a lot of things but the world is worse of without a mind like that, even when he did say things I disagreed with. His brother is a poor version of him but he can still come out with a good line or two.

Need to agree to disagree mate. I love his aggressive cut to the chase attitude. (or did)

Just because someone who shares a similar belief to you is (in your opinion) an *, doesn't dictate that you should feel ashamed.

It's true. The man had nothing but contempt for Scotland.
