Just seen that Milik went to Napoli for €35m, even though he's had a good start that's bonkers.

£30m for Moussa Sissoko this summer was mental as well, based on an admittedly impressive Euro showing, definitely not for his Newcastle one's anyway.

Always thought £20m for Denilson from Betis back in the day was mental as well. Was decent, looked highly promising and was entertaining but to become the most expensive player ever for a time was just weird.

That said, even the higuain deal was ridiculous if you ask me.

Makes you wonder, even stepping away from the epl, if an Italian team is willin to pay a dutch team 30m for milik, why can't we demand the same for demebele if he continues as is? From anyone.

Also a mental transfer deal as well.
Pogba is not worth that at all (no player is to be fair. Maybe messi). Man United went in to that with too much ego and too much to lose in Not signing him. And juventus knew that. Absolutely got stung for it.

The David luiz deal from Chelsea to psg was absolutely insane.
Only outdone by Chelsea buying him back for another silly fee.

Aye, their are explanations for them but it's mental nontheless. I imagine anybody Napoli went to this summer would have been bumping the money right up.

Breno - Sao Paulo to Bayern Munchen - 12 million euros

Stardom, fussball, arson and prison. Ladies and gentlemen, the Breno story.

Marcus Berg - FC Groningen to HSV - 10.5 million euros

A classic case of 'great in Holland, can't get it done anywhere else' here. Failed to find his feet in the Bundesliga, has now dropped down a level to Greek football.

Carlos Alberto - Corinthians to Werder Bremen - 7.8 million euros

No, not that Carlos Alberto. This one cost Werder a club record fee and boy did he flop, playing less than 200 minutes in all competitions before being farmed out on a series of loans back to Brazil due to reportedly suffering from insomnia.

Jose Sosa - Estudiantes to Bayern Munchen - 9 million euros

Injured at the start of his spell at Bayern and struggled to live up to his billing, Jurgen Klinsmann's arrival saw him consigned him to a spot as an expensive bench warmer before he was eventually moved on.

Marquinhos - Avai to Bayer Leverkusen - 4.5 million euros

Splash out a fair chunk on a youngster from a team in the Brazilian second tier: what could possibly go wrong? Well, everything, as it turned out. Made the lofty heights of the Leverkusen bench for a solitary game after toiling away in the U23s for a bit. Never did get on the pitch for the seniors before being flogged at a fraction of what they paid for him.

Victor Ikpeba - AS Monaco to Bor. Dortmund - 6 million euros

A grand total of 4 goals in 35 appearances in all competitions for Dortmund, banished on loan after a fight with the manager. Definitely didn't live up to the form he showed in France.

Karim Ziani - Marseille to Wolfsburg - 10 million euros

Short on stature, high on price, short on goals. Made a grand total of 15 Budesliga appearances without finding the back of the net from the wing, the club eventually terminating his contract after just two years.

Same premise as Milik because Torres had been sold by Liverpoolright at the end of the window and Newcastle knew they a) needed a striker quickly and b) they had dough to spend.

Christian Benteke to Liverpool, the fact they got more back for him off Palace is even more mental :56:

He scored a goal for them in their CL final win, wasn't exactly prolific in the league though with 2 goals in 22 apps in his only season there according to Wiki. He clearly had issues off the pitch.

Alex Teixeira from Shakhtar Donetsk to Jiangsu Suning for 50m euros (£42 million). Decent player but that's a mental fee.

The very same one. The fact he went back to Brazil after Porto and had to get loaned out by Corinthians because he fell out with the manager should have set off all the warning bells at Werder.

Why did he go back to Brazil? It just seemed odd at the time

    Anyone remember Lucas Severino? :56:

Admittedly, not me lol. Was looking at how much Man Utd paid for Kléberson and Atlético-PR came up. Punted him to Rennes for 21 million Euro in 2001.

Paid big money by an investment company. Was at the same time they went mad and bought Tevez; Macherano, Nilmar, Roger Flores, Sebastián Domínguez etc for huge sums all around the same time. Won the league fairly comfortably in 2005 but got relegated two years later as a result of the poor management at board level.
