I think it was quite clear that Ancelotti wasn't going to take Madrid any further. He has had two bad league campaigns. For Perez that is enough for the sack.

Of course he doesn't Madrid is nothing more than a brand now (well as long as Perez is president).

He uses it for his own means aswell. No surprises that when Perez has been president of Madrid, his construction company has been highly saught after and they gain more contracts. Madrid is luxury, it's a status symbol which he himself uses.

He has turned their 'fortune' around remarkably but on the field it is a sham.

See, I could understand if they'd gotten rid of Carlo and replaced him with someone of similar or higher standing in the management game.

They haven't. Rafa last managed a Spanish club over ten years ago, and the expectations were vastly different to what he'll face now.

Since leaving Liverpool he's been sacked by Inter, did nothing of note whilst caretaker manager of Chelsea and has managed to spend a shitload of money at Napoli and win hee haw.

In fact, it could be said that he's not won a meaningful trophy in ten years, unless you count his "caretaker" Europa league win with Chelsea as a major accomplishment.

As I said, either Madrid are aiming shockingly low in the managerial department, or they basically want a coach that will let the players dictate the team.

Funny how he claims this but it was Calderon that did it.

They really are a strange club. I Am sure you need to be a multi-millionaire just to put your name up for nomination to begin with.

Rafa Benitez is highly connected with Madrid. Spent years there as a player (at Castilla) and has a good relationship with regards to signings as well. He has a respectable amount of success in his career to be considered for the job. (even if it is little compared to Ancelotti)

Rafa has always been highly thought of in Spain, ever since Valencia. It's a shocking move from Madrid IMO but can see where it's came from.

West Ham must be thinking they're going to be minted with playing in the Olympic stadium or something...

Well he is out of contract. No doubt they'll offer him about £60k a week but that is pure pish man.

Benitez dramatically overachieved at Valencia and Liverpool, he even did pretty well at Chelsea considering the fans and players both didn't want him there. He's clearly a good coach. Clearly the hierarchy at Madrid weren't happy with the fact that Ancelotti wasn't getting Bale playing well, so that's why he went, combined with not winning anything this year. I can imagine Benitez is the man to get someone like Bale playing well, talk of him playing more centrally, like just off Ronaldo who may actually play as a centre forward under Benitez's Madrid.
