Inelligible player and suspended player have two different punishments, the one for the situation we're experiencing is a 3-0 forfeit.

 

And we shouldn't really need to play 3 qualifiers anyway think we can all agree on that

I agree, mate. It's totally not our fault and if the ruling puts as through, we have to take it. Any club would, including Legia.

Having said that, even though Legia made the mistake and UEFA would be the ones (not for the first time) showing a complete lack of common sense, it'd be us that look bad. I can see plenty of long tedious arguments at work defending us from English people.

Of course I'd rather be in the CL no matter how many English people look down on us, but this one just doesn't feel right to me. The fact that I don't really like Legia much paradoxically makes me feel worse about it.

To be fair we were destined to go through but when they subbed him on I lost all hope and I imagine so did the players, it's only write we get another crack at it.

 

Honestly I'd take it in a heartbeat if we were offered a way back in. So * if it's sneaking in the back door or whatever, it's not our fault that they fielded a suspended player, and we're not in any position to refuse this of it came our way. Of course there's no guarantees we will, we'll just have to see the final outcome of it all

A match may be declared forfeit if a player who is ineligible under the regulations of the competition concerned participates in the match, as long as the opposing team files a protest.


There is no if but or maybe here.

The player wasn't ineligible due to not being named on the team sheet against us.

He's suspended because he hadn't completed his suspension period.

Why? because he wasn't registered to play in one of the matches previous. Suspension isn't served if you don't register the player.

It may seem petty but rules are rules and in black and white, no ambiguity here.

Don't think the board won't go all the way with this.

Yeah. Precedent is mixed but the offences are different.

A few cases:
(1) Debrecen vs. Litex Lovech – Debrecen fined, but no 3-0 defeat. Player was ineligible but UEFA ruled it was a mistake and in any case he played no role in the win.
(2) Litex Lovech vs. Sliema Wanderers – Litex lost game in question 3-0 after he played a part in victory despite not being on the teamsheet; aggregate score 3-3, Litex progressed on in-game vs. default goals.
(3) Mura vs. Arsenal Kyv – Mura won 3-0 after suspended player was fielded by Kyv.

Our case is most like (1) and (3). It's like (1) in that the player had absolutely diddly-squat to do with the result, but like (3) in that we're talking about fielding a suspended player (complete no-no in the rule book) vs. an ineligible/unregistered one (case-by-case).
