IMO Mikael Lustig is our 1st choice right back and I think Matthews is too good a player not to be getting regular games, so I was thinking could we turn Matthews into a 1st choice right-mid or even a right winger? He has the qualities needed to play there IMO, he is fast, strong and has good end product. Its just something i have been thinking about and was wondering what others thoughts are on this?

    And he's Welsh...

I wouldn't mind seeing it, has the ability to dribble by defenders, put in a decent cross and has shown he has a cracking shot or two in the locker. My only concern would be build up play, I think he would be more successful in counter-attacking situations.

He's played in midfield a few times in the Champions League and he was fairly poor. Against AC Milan at the San Siro his end product was dreadful.

The main issue with this is that he's come out and said that he personally wants to play right back as that's where he thinks he's best.

It hard to get a player to perform if you're playing them out of their preferred position.

I'd prefer Lustig moved to CB if anything

As mentioned, his end product drastically diminishes in that position

he is still a young lad surely if he was moved to a position further up the field in an attacking role then end product dribbling crossing etc. are things which he could focus on improving in training? I just think its something which could be tried out especially as wee forrest isnt going to be playing for a while.

Because he's a quick welsh fullback?

He's not skilful enough or good enough technically to do it.

all gareth bale was when he started out was a "quick welsh full back" im not saying it would be a success story but i would like to see him played there a few games and see how it goes

Bale wasn't really, Bale wasn't that quick before. If anything he was a slow player with a good left-foot, more like Mulgrew than Matthews.

Why should we want Matthews to be another Bale , surely we want Matthews to be versatile enough to play equally well right side of midfield as well as right back . To criticise his end product in the San Siro is a bit rich . He wasn't the only player on the night to suffer from bad end product , maybe the reason for this was because we were not getting enough men into good positions to take his crosses . It's hardly surprising . We have an excellent centre defence partnership of Virgil and Ambrose and I hope it isn't broke up .

It is a shame, I'd love to have a player of his ability in the team every week. Fisher's a good wee player too.

He already played on the wing several times last season and will probably play there again plenty of times this season, hes capable there. He isn't a Bale style player though, Bale always was a good crosser of the ball with a good shot etc Matthews is more naturally defensive in his play.

    I would agree with this.

He has strength, plenty of pace and a fantastic work rate but technically I don't think he is suited to right midfield or a right wing position.

I also like where he is, I imagine there will be a good amount of rotation with him and Lustig. As someone said earlier I actually like Lustig at centre half. Should be considered a challenger to Ambrose for that position. Sometimes at right back I think he is a bit too safe and doesn't provide enough going forward for me.

Lustig should be CB leaving Matthews and Fisher as the 2 RB's

I think Fisher is good in that position, I remember him doing well going up the wings last season on occasion- if we're out of options then it's worth a try.

I've always said I would include him in the team in this position, this would be my team currently for next season in a 4-3-3.

    --------------------------------Forster/Gordon--------------------------

    -------Lustig------------Ambrose--------------Virgil-----------Izzy--------

    ----------------Matthews-----------Biton------------Johansen------------

    -----------------------------------Commons------------------------------

    --------------------Griffiths--------------------Watt---------------------

Maybe swap Mcgregor for Commons if he keeps impressing. That's a pretty solid side.
