    DUMP THE DAILY RECORD CELTIC

Picture the scene. Monday morning in Scotland. Preston from Paisley and Frazer from Fife both turn up to work, looking forward to their clubs opening SPL game, particularly Frazer whose club has just been promoted. It's their coffee break so both pick up the Daily Record and quickly flip to the back page, to be confronted with the above; provocative, misleading headline and stock 'snarling Neil Lennon' photo.

"See that * Lennon is moaning about referee's again" says Frazer.

"Aye, nay wonder he gets bombs and bullets sent to him when he acts like that all the time," replies Preston, "you know, he really does mostly bring it upon himself; you wouldn't see Craig Brown or Ally McCoist act like that".

It's a scene that is likely played out all across Scotland, every day, especially among the feeble minded readers of the Daily Record. So Frazer and Preston both turn up to watch Dumfermline v St Mirren that same night. During the game, the fans become aware that the Celtic manager is watching in the stands. The chant of "Neil Lennon, you're a *" starts; remembering the article they read in the Record that morning, both Frazer and Preston join in, neglecting supporting their team just so they can mock a man they have never met and dislike just because the paper told them so. To them it is merely 'banter' and fits in with the 'psycho' image that is unjustly encouraged by large sections of the Scottish media.

Of course, Neil Lennon is as thick skinned as they come and has dealt with much worse abuse than being called a '*'. But it just shows how easy it is for some Scottish media outlets to influence opinion for the worse. The Daily Record is the main culprit; even at the height of the bombs and bullets scandal last season, the Record was running with provocative innuendo about Neil hurling racist slurs at El Hadji Diouf; something which Diouf himself denied ever happened.

The Daily Record has a long history of printing anti-Celtic headlines. If they weren't depicting Fergus McCann, the man who saved Celtic, as Saddam Hussien, it was the infamous 'Thugs and Thieves' headline that was proven to be utterly false leading to the editor losing his job; the incident being the turning point for many Celtic fans in that many swore never to buy it again. In recent times, with Jim 'succulent lamb' Traynor and Keith 'Rangers News' Jackson at the helm, the paper has continued the anti Celtic narrative; whether it was Traynor calling the racist Famine Song 'just banter' or Jackson telling lies about Scott Brown wanting to leave the club and his latest piece this Monday.

Usually, Celtic have chosen to ignore most of the anti-Celtic stuff in the media which has its pluses; why bother giving them the oxygen of publicity? On the other hand, after the Celtic manager was victim of attempted murder last season largely because the media have built up and continually portrayed Lennon as a hate figure, surely the media would have embraced an era of responsibility, especially in light of the News International scandal? Fat chance if Mondays Record is anything to go by.

Celtic did release a statement from the manager in response to the Record, a welcome move but one that doesn't go nearly far enough. Expressing mere 'disappointment' isn't going to deter guys like Keith Jackson from publishing such provocative articles; indeed, he would probably be more encouraged to do so knowing that what he does 'disappoints' our manager.

What is needed is no less than the absolute end of any cooperation with the Daily Record; ban them from the stadium and Lennoxtown, remove pitch side advertisements for the Record, refuse to talk to their journalists. By in large, Celtic fans in particular no longer get their information on the club from the Record, (or indeed any other newspaper) preferring the wealth of new fan media that can be found online. However, to those who for some reason still do, stop. The Scottish tabloid media is gradually dying amid falling circulation figures; let's speed that process up!

Dare I say it, Celtic need to take a leaf out of Rangers book when it comes to dealing with perceived media injustices. Whether you agree or not that Ally McCoist had a legitimate reason for demanding a BBC apology, the uncompromising stance got the desired result; the BBC caved in and apologized for making McCoist look like more of a clueless idiot than he does already. On the other hand, one suspects there were plenty of people within BBC Scotland queuing up to offer their profound apologies to the currently winless Rangers manager.

This is the same organization that has steadfastly refused to apologize for slurring the Celtic support at the Scottish Cup Final with a totally unfounded allegation of 'sectarian singing'; especially when it is traditional Irish songs such as 'The Fields of Athenry' or the Irish national anthem that has been falsely tagged as 'sectarian'. This is largely because the club have left it to individual fans to raise complaints rather than raise the matter themselves on behalf of the support. The fans in this instance have been badly let down by the club.

Obviously the club can't act on every little criticism it attracts from the press but when the good reputation of Celtic fans is being slurred by a publicly funded body such as the BBC, the least we expect is the club to act on it.

For now, the immediate removal of the Daily Record's access to our club would be a good start.
