Major League Soccer recently refused a $1 million offer from Celtic FC for Revolution midfielder Shalrie Joseph, according to Joseph's agent, Ron Waxman.

The league said no to the offer," Waxman said yesterday.
They said they were not going to sell [Joseph] during the season. It was a wonderful opportunity to play for one of the great clubs in the world and to play in the Champions League.

I understand why they did it, but I am saddened by it. They don't want to sell players during the season because it sends the wrong message to fans, plus the Revolution are making a playoff run and a drive for the championship. The offer was being made after the transfer window closed here so they wouldn't be able to replace him."

Joseph, a defensive midfielder who has also started as an outside back and central defender, renegotiated his contract last year and is earning $167,500 annually through December 2008. Celtic was impressed by Joseph's skill and ability to dictate the midfield tempo in a 1-1 tie with the Revolution in an exhibition last month. ``I hope Celtic coming in for him sends a message as to how good a player he really is," Waxman said. ``I believe he could get on a plane and step off in any country in Europe and not look out of place on any team in any league.

It's not that Shalrie wanted to abandon the Revolution, but this was a chance to make way more money and also to play in the Champions League against Benfica and Manchester United. Not very many teams have come to the MLS specifically to get a player for the Champions League."

Celtic begins Champions League play Sept. 13 in a group with Benfica, Copenhagen, and Manchester United. The Glasgow club has improved markedly since playing in Foxborough, adding Dutch striker Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink, and is on the verge of paying a transfer fee of about $3 million euros to Real Madrid for defensive midfielder Thomas Gravesen.

MLS also recently rebuffed offers for Revolution midfielder Clint Dempsey.

Dempsey will return from a two-game suspension for the Revolution's game at Columbus Saturday. Joseph is seventh on the all-time Revolution appearance list with 106 in three-plus seasons.

How can the league reject an offer for a club player?? Its like the SPL saying no to selling Petrov.

MLS players have central contracts with the league and not the clubs

Its the same with Irish Rugby, Contracts are with the IRFU not the clubs and its the best player development system in Europe

The reason it's done centrally is so the league doesn't go bankrupt like the NASL did in the 80's. What happened then is you had some clubs, like New York Cosmos, who had rich owners and were getting big crowds, that were spending huge amounts of money. Then the smaller clubs tried to keep up and they kept losing teams to bankruptcy and other things. MLS looked at that and decided to control teams spending and to have it centrally so they wouldn't lose clubs every year. There has been talk of abandoning the system within a few years.

anyway, a bit about Joseph. He is IMO one of the top 4 or 5 players in MLS. He was born in Grenada but moved to New York at a very young age. He was a bit of a late bloomer, played some lower league and didn't make his MLS debut until he was 24. While he was playing in the lower leagues he was approached by Grenada to represent them, thinking he had no chance to ever play for the US he accepted. If he hadn't he would be a regular for the US without a doubt and he has expressed regret about that.

He reminds a bit of Bouba Diop from Fulham but he doesn't have the long range shooting skills of Diop.

I remember this guy from the preseason big strong DM and good in the tackle & on the ball. I think there are a few players we could get from MLS, Mainly Freddy Adu when he turns 18 & the CB back with DC UTD was very good as well, Boswell i think his name was!

It was answered above, but MLS have a central contract system, meaning the league controls the players not the clubs.

they also use a play off system instead of just having the team at the top of the table win the cup. the top few teams in the east play the top few teams in the west...iin a single elimination tourny. its really kind of crappy cause a team thats been so-so all year long can win the cup.

its a shame for the guy who looks like he wants the move , i don't think its right for a league 2 hold back a players career like that.

    MILK WAS A BAD CHOICE..
not really, mate.. if you think about it, this is a far better system.. it means that a long standing monopoly by any one, or two powers is less likely, and is better for the (their?) game in the long run..

if you think about it this way, would you rather have celtic going into the champions league not having the carrot of finishing second in thier mini league to reach the ko stages?.. any other way and man yoo, chelsea, real, barca, bayern would be untouchable for the forseeable future, and we celts would have a lot less motivation and excitement in europe..

a system like this may be the only way to stop the likes of abramovich, msi, etc, etc playing real life championship manager with the game.. it's got to the point where a tycoons brute monetary force is the main factor in deciding which clubs are considered great and not history, footballing culture, fanbase and development etc, etc..

    hail, hail :celt_2:
