Chelsea's game against Celtic yesterday gave London's Metropolitan Police Force a major headache as they struggled to contain disturbances that were centred around the Fulham area of West London. Groups of Celtic fans were 'held' in pubs at Kings Cross as Police tried to curb the expected trouble.
The Met had to draft in extra cover and seconded a section of officers from British Transport Police. As soon as they were in position outside Fulham Broadway underground station, the officers who had previously been patrolling the area were then sent off to deal with incidents in the North End Rd.
An estimated 1000 Chelsea supporters were said to be involved in running battles and skirmishes with Celtic fans around Fulham Broadway as violence flared at or close to Bootsy Brogan's, The Slug And Lettuce and The Jolly Malster public houses.
The Chelsea supporters were joined by others from Millwall, Glasgow Rangers, Airdrie Utd and Falkirk who were there to take part in trouble on a scale that had not been seen around Chelsea for many years.
Police held a large contingent of Celtic supporters at Bootsy Brogan's until after the game had kicked-off and around 700 were taken under heavy police escort into the Matthew Harding Stand.
However, the Police decided to take them the long way, preferring to use The Shed entrance to the stadium rather than the Britannia Gate. This meant that they didn't actually get into the ground until moments before the half-time whistle sounded.
Celtic, usually notable for their massive travelling support, were conspicuous for the small number of fans who actually attended the game, an estimated 3000. Chelsea had originally offered them up to 11,000 tickets.

Following the game, the Fulham Rd was shut until 11.30 pm until Police were able to clear away the Chelsea supporters who had gathered to try to attack the Celtic fans. Under Police guidance, the visitors were escorted back to Fulham Broadway underground station.
Although the Police had hoped to get the Celtic fans away quietly, they were kept busy as Chelsea supporters boarded trains at Parsons Green to try to get to the Hoops via the underground system, thereby evading the Police cordons that had blocked off the back roads leading to the Fulham Rd.
Police were then kept busy until the small hours of the morning dealing with sporadic incidents in West and Central London as the Celtic fans dispersed.
Sources have suggested that, as part of the agreement to get Celtic here last night, Chelsea will be playing a return fixture at Parkhead in a warm-up friendly before the start of the 07/08 season.

Just another reason celtic would not be allowed to join the English Premier League as every club has it's hooligans and consider Celtic to be a huge scalp for them.

    I don't have one
I wasn't going to post this, but it's how i have felt ever since the game was announced. But i knew by posting it, i was just going to trigger all your insecurities that everyones out to get you when in reality it's the complete opposite.

You're fans and the Celtic board have got to take into consideration London is one of the worst hit areas by the IRA... All the bombings and what not that have happened over the years has left a sour taste in their mouths... You can't expect a friendly atmosphere when your fans(mostly notably your away section) are known for singing pro IRA songs at games...

This game should of never happened...

Chelsea are just scumbags of the highest order. This happens at matches regardless of who they play.

2002/2003 UEFA Cup Finals, over 90,000 Celtic fans travelled to Seville to support their bhoys, there were zero arrests. But typical english press to blame Celt fans when it was just english hooligans.

raven, the fact is that celtic have played in london many times in the last 5 years or so. i have attended all of these, with the exception of the chelsea game, as i am unwilling to pay £40 for a friendly, especially with 3 CL away trips coing up. we have played numerous games against QPR and fulham, as well as a game against arsenal. all of these have been enjoyable and have passed without any incident. normal londoners seem to like the atmosphere created by our fans and often join us in the pubs before and after to enjoy the presence of celtic fans

however, there has been trouble against spurs and chelsea. why? not because of the IRA's damage to london, but because, as someone said previously, celtic is a big scalp, for right-wing supporter groups, such as spurs and chelsea. in fact, millwall were so desparate to take on celtic, that they ignored their fierce rivalry with chelsea, just to take on our fans.

Normal londoners either do not care about celtic. Right-wing hooligan groups affiliated with the BNP and NF will have been looking forward to this day and organising themselves ever since this ill advised fixture was announced

as for the supposed return fixture. celtic surely will have cancel it and instead arrange another fixture with a club with whom we share similar values instead of these fascist thugs. will celtic ever do the obvious and arrange of friendly against st.pauli???? they seem so out of touch with celtic fans that they don't even acknowledge the clubs we would like to have playing at celtic...unlike leeds and chelsea!

rav3n mad , no insecurities from me m8 , just fact, if you are a celtic supporter you will realise as do the politicians there was a war going on at that time ,and the british army themselves were responsible for quite a few atrosities themselves so dont dare try and equate a * football match with more innocents attending, as an excuse for fascist loyalists feeding their sick needs by causing mayhem in london, and it better not be lost on anyone these * from airdrie and falkirk taking part so lets set up a 'freindly' there and pass on our pleasantries to the little hun scum shitbags * bless , hail fukin hail :fear: :fear: :fear: is this insecure

A found this on the herald website:
At least 11 people were arrested last night after disturbances involving rival football fans before the so-called friendly Battle of Britain involving Celtic and Chelsea in London.
Fears of trouble were expressed before the game because of Chelsea's traditional allegiance to Rangers and "appropriate policing", including officers on horseback, was put in place. Hundreds of the 2500 Celtic fans were corralled by police outside a pub, about half a mile from Chelsea's Stamford Bridge ground, before being escorted to the stadium. As a result, many fans missed the 7.45pm kick-off.
After the 1-1 draw, Celtic fans were kept in the ground for about 20 minutes to allow Chelsea fans among the 20,000 crowd to disperse.
Martin Gordon, 29, from Greenock, but now living and working in London, missed the kick-off. He said: "There were more police at this game than I have ever seen at an Old Firm match. It was reassuring in one way. But it was also annoying that hundreds of Celtic fans missed the kick-off."
A Metropolitan Police spokeswoman said: "Three minor, isolated disturbances in the Fulham Road area before the game, involving rival sets of Celtic and Chelsea fans, resulted in 11 arrests for various public order offences and a minor assault."
Chief Superintendent Kenny Scott, of Strathclyde Police, led a delegation of the force's officers to the match. He said later: " There was no trouble inside the stadium. There were isolated outbreaks of trouble before the game, but that is not unusual when you have a large travelling support."

Rav3n, Scotland and Ireland are two of the worst hit countries from the greed and thugery of the English but we Scottish and Irish can go to a game and have a good time without any trouble. Thugs just use Pro IRA thing as an excuse.

Oh here we go again with the blame the Irish crap. It's the various different racist right wing English fans who cause all the trouble and yet it's our fault.
I guess the message is that despite the English people's record of pure unadulterated evil when it comes to anything Irish it is really Irish peoples fault.
O and by the way maybe you should take into considration 850 odd years of murder and genocide directed against the Irish from London. Not to mention a London govenrment that since 1922 has financially backed up a bigoted and racist regime in the 6 counties. Or no that must be those * Irish peoples fault as well. Yes thats it, we forced those nice English people to be so bigoted and racist.

I am a jock living in Engerland and I see on a daily basis how English so called football fans are narrow minded and racist, and it is getting worse. I went to last years Fulham game and no bother at all. This was an ill advised game, against a narrow minded bunch of insecure tossers.

chelsea fans are renouned for thier right wing activites as are millwall,i went to a pre season game once down at the new den as i was stuck for something to do and the millwall fans were attacking each other so they don't even need an excuse.Outside the ground there was scumbags selling national front magazines and plenty of people buying them.England is full of firms some have facist links like the headhunters of chelsea or the bushwackers of millwall, but you also have non facist firms like birminham's zulu warriors and west hams ICF.This game should never have been sanctioned we all knew it would happen but the board decided to chase the money and disreguard the safety of the celtic fans
