This is a crude and very approximate look at what Strahan might have to spend on more players? With all this speculation on the likes of Tymoshuck, VoH, Gravesen, Bridge and erm Petkov, we need serious cash!

Let's take a look at last year's kitty.

Last summer he was given a £7.3M transfer + £4.7M.

This is a total of £12M

    Zurawski - £2.5M + £0.75M approx wages
    Nakamura - £2.7M + £1M approx wages
    Virgo - £1.5M + £0.5M approx wages
    Boruc - £0.6M + £0.75M approx wages
    Telfer - £0.2M + £0.5M approx wages
    Camara - free + £0.4M approx wages
Du Wei - free + £0.3M approx wages
    Aliadiere - £0.5M including wages

At the beginning of the year the following was made available:

    Dion Dublin - free + £0.25M wages (1/2 season)
    Roy Keane - free + £0.75M wages (1/2 season)
    Mark Wilson - £0.5M + £0.25M wages (1/2 season)

    That a further £1.75M.

    So that balances out at £12M + £1.75M = £13.75M spent

So what have we spent this summer?

    Well, let's take a look:

    Caldwell - free + £0.75M wages
    Miller - free + £0.75M wages
    Riordan - £0.2M + £0.5M wages
    Jarosik - £2.5M + £1M wages
    Sno - £0.1M + £0.5M wages

A total of £6.3M spent thus far.

A number of high earners have left the club ie. Keane, Hartson, Sutton and Agathe. Your looking at £4.5M in wages a year there.

In addition, we received £0.5M for Hartson's transfer.

    That makes a cool £5M

So infact we have only spent £1.3M (ie. £6.3M - £5M)

Now if we take the £13.5M WGS spent last season and say that Celtic will match that.

    That leaves us £13.5M - £1.3M = £12.2M to spend.

Now if we manage to get:

    Petrov - £6M + £1.5M wages
    Pearson - £0.75M + £0.5M wages

offloaded then that would generate an extra £8.75M

If you add that to the £12.2M + £8.75M then it leaves us approx £21M

So lets look at the targets:

    Tymoshuck - £5.5M + £2M in wages
    VoH - £5M + £2M in wages
    Bridge - £4M + £1.5M in wages

We could potentially sign them all for £20M!!!!

    :D

    Keep the faith brothers...

but also brought in Nakamura ,gave Maloney the chance who was to be loaned out to the sheep at the time ,, signed zurawski and Mark Wilson ,,, and the biggest signing finally a goalkeeper .Boruc.-potentially world class..as proven in the WC.. same with any club not all signings go for ya ... but some do.

I see no flaws in your calculations... Here's hoping :)

Edit: I think Boruc cost more than .6m (That was making the loan deal permanent... we had to pay something initially for the loan, did we not?) and I though Du Wei cost something in transfer funds (not sure on that).

Not sure. You're probably right. Celtic had a £500,000 automatic buy option and I figured around £100,000 for the loan + bigger wages. I think we managed to get out of spending any cash on Du Wei but he did cost wages despite only playing about 1 game.

Celtic have been incredibly thrifty this year tbh.

With a 20pts league win (the biggest margin sice the halcyon days of 1970 and automatic CL group stage qualification, WGS shoudl be backed with serious cash. I think we could be suprised at who will come to Celtic this year. You have to admit his signing haven't been bad.

Let's take a look at last year.

Boruc, Zurawski, Nakamura and Wilson have been excellent

Keane was one for the history books

Telfer and Dublin were two old pals who are simply stop gaps

Camara was a MON target and a mistake

Virgo will go down in history as one of the biggest flops in OF history

We'll have to wait and see how Miller, Caldwell, Sno, Jarosik and Riordan work out this year :p

As much as I think the lad was a terrible waste of money and Strachan's worst buy, he can't be mentioned in the same breath as Flo when it comes to OF flops!:56:

    That is utter nonsense!
OBVIOUSLY you dont know what a fitba player is, Flo was way over priced but to say he was a flop is utter *!
And Virgo is NOT even in the same class as Flo fitba wise!
Reading some of your posts, I get the impression you are in the running for president of the Walter Mitty club? :84:

Honestly when i was fit, i was better than Virgo, he is the worst player ever to play for Celtic, Why is WGS finding it amazing that we all see how * he is but him.:31:

Give him away please, its an insult to us all when he wears the hoops.:47:

There's no doubt that players like Camara and Virgo should be ushered to the door of Celtic park.

Thompson been a good servant but he I don't want his whining £1.5M/yr behind warming the bench this season.

As far as I am concerned Telfer can stay but shouldn't be in the team. As soon as Balde is back and we have a LB, we should start with Wilson and McManus and have Caldwell, Varga and Telfer in reserve.

Wallace can go but tbh I would prefer to keep Pearson as I think that we will regret offloading him in the long run.

Its early yet, but I will guarantee you that Balde will still be a * problem, and if he isnt then I know fuckall about fitba, and later on I will accept that assumtion, if proven wrong.

I think he has about £4.5M left to spend, he's been very careful with it though

GS has to be wise with the money hes got to spend if not he could be the 1st manager up for the chop if his players don't start to produce the goods and even if GS has got lets say £6million,:eek:Well how the FFF can he go for a player worth over that+wages and then go for another player who's ment to be worth £3million and if the lad stays in the Ukraine his wages will be tax-free+the owner of Shakhtar is a Billionaire so Why would he join the SPL when he WILL have to pay tax its a bit stupid if u ask me but maybe GS+Peter Lawwell know somethings we don't so here's hoping all Strachan's signings do well fingers crossed eh???

Why would Lawell phone the CE of Shaktar unless he meant business? It might be that Shaktar are trying to up his price :(
