Peaceful protests in favour of a democratic civilian government in Sudan, have led to the death of many people, with some reports suggesting up to 500 killed. There have been further allegations of rape, including the rape of children. It started with the ousting of their long term president, Omar al-Bashir.

He was ousted via a military coup on April 6th, this year, after ruling for three decades. This was in protest of his emergency austerity policies which aimed to prevent the country entering economic collapse. This dropped living standards, which included cuts to bread and fuel subsidies. The UN are now claiming that the country are heading into a ‘human rights abyss’.

The country is currently under the control of a military council. Sudan doesn’t have a unified army and there are a various amount of paramilitary groups and Islamist militias. Protesters have demanded control is changed to a civilian group.

“In the last 10 days, at least 124 people have been killed by regime forces and more than 700 have been injured as protests have steadily engulfed Khartoum. There are widespread reports of sexual violence, mass arrests, gunfire in medical facilities and bodies floating in the river Nile. Beyond Khartoum, there have been larger massacres in historical conflict areas, where early reports suggest that people are being killed in even greater numbers.

Gen Mohamed Hamdan “Hemeti” Dagolo, who was instrumental in the atrocities committed in Darfur. Those crimes resulted in the deaths of more than 300,000 people, the displacement of millions and destabilisation of the entire region. And the groups responsible have ties to Saudi-backed forces implicated in atrocities in Yemen.”
