Yes the male and female Teal are very different as in most Ducks. Also the light can really confuse any birder. The Drake Teal's Head is a lovely Reddy Brown with a Bottle Green(For Celtic of course)Big eye stripe in good light but quite dull in bad light.
Yes light can cause alot of havoc in all birdwatching thinking about it:50:

It's an excellent thread and it will far surpass that number as more and more of us cotton on to how cool it is to get out and about and develop our knowledge and skills with a camera. With all the modern technology at our fingertips we can take excellent photos of the world around us and the creatures that inhabit it with us. The more I do the more I want to take up picture framing! We have all manner of therapies in our own backyard.

My daughter and I had a superb birding experience a few years ago at Frankfield Loch. There were rumours of a Pectoral Sandpiper being there. As we were at Hogganfield Loch, Frankfield is minutes away. We headed up , and after 5mins, we saw it. Absolutely stunning bird. Moments later, Caroline got excited and said "Da, what's that?" I looked in the scope, saw a bird we'd never seen before. Tried to get some photos but it would stay still. We couldn't wait to get home to identify it. We were delighted to see it was a Blue Winged Teal. Obviously a vagrant, but WHAT a sighting. Frankfield Loch was busy for a couple of days until it flew away.

Near Stepps in Glasgow. If you go up Cumbernauld Rd, about a mile or so by Hogganfield Loch, it's next to a new housing estate mate. It's not too big, but it can be good for rarities good friend.

Cider, your post reminded me of a time we were up at the RSPB Reserve at Vane Farm in Perthshire. Great place to see White-Tailed Sea Eagles. We were in the main office where the scopes where. Every one was looking through the scopes and binoculars hoping for an Eagle, when some idiot shouted out; " Bird of Prey". Everyone looked , then laughed as it was a HERON. That idiot was me. There was an elderly man standing at the big window, obviously been birding for years, standing, slightly smiling. He looked round to me and said," We've all done it". Didn't make me feel any better. My wife and daughter had a great laugh on the drive back to Glasgow.
