Wouldn't surprise me, Johnie. Could never get anything past her. She missed nothing...eyes like a hawk and the nose of a bloodhound. :giggle1:

One of my favorite memories growing up was my grandpa's project to fend off squirrels (he was a hobbyist in many things). When they were on the feeders, they'd bully the other birds off, which was infuriating. In response, he rigged up a discrete wire from the house out to the main feeder that wrapped around the ledges of the feeder. It was the only feeder that seemed to consistently interest the squirrels. He had a switch the he wired in the house that he would flip from the breakfast table over coffee almost every other morning.

When visiting in summer, I'd often wake up to the howling of laughter downstairs. The electric current wasn't strong enough to harm the squirrels, only startle the living * out of them! :84: As a result, there were many birds to watch as the squirrels were forced to feed off the ground, of which there were still plenty of spilled goods to still enjoy! When he felt bad, he went out and scattered seed for them under the feeder, too. :56:

    * I wouldn't go so far as electrifying them with shocks, my unpopular opinion is magpies just seem pure hun devil bird's yet I know they are a relative of my beloved crow's but they are hun bird's somehow to me

Ha - me neither on the shocks with my own feeders. There are squirrel-proof feeders now and I also prefer to just let nature figure it all out.

Don't have Magpies where I live, so I've only see them when traveling out West in the States. Very lively and flashy birds from what I recall - that your experience?

We have magpies in our garden. They scare the other birds out of pure mischief. They can't use the feeders themselves but they will dive at the finches and * on the feeders to scare them off. We also have coconut feeders hanging from tree branches which the blue * love. I have noticed the magpies position themselves on the the ground underneath the coconut and from a standing start they fly up vertically to peck the feed. Don't like them as a rule but there's something admirable about their resourcefulness...and their leap is impressive - reminds me of Henrik's!!

Magpies get a hard time and lots of blame. Yes they will raid nests and kill young birds if given the chance.but this is part of nature and other more popular birds do the same thing.
One nestling killer is the ever so handsome Great Spotted Woodpecker which can outdo the Magpie in some large gardens!
The lovely Jay also behaves in a similar manner.
Of course Birds Of Prey do what they do.
And take the Great * they have been known to kill Goldcrests!!
The natural balance is the key and it is Humans that break the locks.
I love the whole Crow family, indeed all birds.

So I look forward to seeing your top 10 or 40:84:

Thanks Madadh Rua, as you know sometimes you can get lucky with what you see when you’re out.

Great list, Johnie. Many of those birds would be in my second Top 10. Sometimes when I'm back on the Birren Road in the Sperrins the only sound to hear is the skylark.

I was telling my wife and daughter about my list(s) yesterday, and my daughter says she could, near enough, tell me what was on my list, because she says I tell her all the time about what birds I think are great. I couldn't believe how stupid I'd been because the first 3 birds she said are all big, big favourites of mine, and I completely forgot about them. After about 20mins, my wife and daughter rhymed off about 20 birds that they know I love, and ones I'd forgotten to put on the list. I have still not heard the end of it. It probably will go on for another couple of days. I DO deserve it.

Interesting post Cidermaster. I had seen the woodpecker systematically strip a treecreeper nest on this year's Springwatch but I didn't know a great * would do the same to wee goldcrests. You're absolutely right of course about it all being part of nature and the natural law but maybe a lifetime spent as a Celtic fan and a nationalist in the north of Ireland makes me identify with the wee underdog every time.
