Rangers reached the semi-final of a World Cup? :eek1:

OK, I figured out that "them" refers to England on about the 3rd read through. * me, though. You might want to make that a bit less ambiguous. :56:

I guess you were quicker to fill in the gaps with background knowledge than I was; but grammatically it is definitely 100% ambiguous. To see that, replace Rangers and England by, say, Levski Sofia and Bulgaria:

Levski Sofia had 4 full Bulgaria internationals (including their Captain) playing for them that got them to the Semi-finals of the World Cup.

Unless you quickly bring to mind that Bulgaria reached a WC semi in 94, your mind probably did a quick double take for a moment. I found myself wondering if he was referring to that CL season where Rangers almost reached the semis, before I finally figured it out.

That 2 people were able to fill in the meaning from background knowledge straight away and that I had to reread it 3 times to do so? So what? I literally never think about the England football team, so that knowledge wasn't very salient for me.

I don't get the hostility. It really doesn't change that it is definitely ambiguous, that some people will initially understand the other meaning until they figure it out and that the image this conjures up (Rangers in a WC semi) is quite comical.

I'm not with the grammar police (not that I could be, even if I wanted; I make far too many mistakes myself). The only time I remember pulling apart someone's grammar, spelling and punctuation for correctness was quite recently as part of a (pretty fair IMHO) analogy for how he was judging Lenny on his his dress sense and ignoring his character. In general I don't do it, because it's obnoxious (as is judging Lenny on his clothes).

However if something is genuinely ambiguous and it tickles me, I'm obviously going to want to share that. I'm just as willing to laugh at the daft things I say sometimes.

I actually thought the post I quoted was quite good. I also supported us through most of the 90's (from 92 on) and had a soft spot for us even before that.

Most people will read World Cup and know that a club team wouldn’t be in that.

Of course, me too. That's why my mind did a double take.

Edit: obviously there are always two things that guide a person in understanding a sentence: context and grammar. Since the grammar here is ambiguous, you obviously got it from context. I didn't. I don't think I am particularly obtuse, so I doubt I'm the only one (though it seems I'm in the minority). That's probably because I never think about the England football team and I do sometimes think about Rangers, therefore the first thought that occurred was that he meant the season Rangers almost reached the CL semi-final. Only after looking at it a few times did I remember that England reached a WC semi in 1990 and it all fell into place; but until that moment, I had a wonderful vision of Rangers fans and their songbook at a WC semi-final.

Of course it all depends on what facts are most salient in a given individual's mind, that's the thing about relying on context. Very few sentences are 100% unambiguous (if any), so context will always be a thing. Nevertheless, the grammar of that sentence, specifically the use of pronouns, is definitely open to misreading.

I thought it was funny and wasn't having a go. I'm genuinely shocked that no one else has said they had the same experience yet.

As I said to Marie, FWIW I thought Moravcik's post was a very good one. People seem to have interpreted this as me having a go, as if I somehow believe I never produce ambiguous sentences. On the contrary, I know I produced a few absolute doozies in the last few months, because I usually read my posts back and make changes to stuff like that.
