Well no because Lawwell decided that there was no need to look any further than Lenny who Hibs were happy to get rid of earlier in the year.
Rafa might not have been interested but it would have done no harm to ask.

Why ask when you know the answer, Rafa is levels above managing celtic, maybe if he was 69 you'd get him, but at 59 he commands a bigger salary than anything Celtic could dream to put n the table.

The same was said about Rodgers before we got him.
You don’t know what motivates people. He may have fancied the challenge.
The point is, we didn’t even enquire because Lawwell was happy with Lennon.

He’s been offered £13m a year in China. Do you think we can afford that kinda money?

No but if I had the same bank balance as Rafa Benitez I would rather manage Celtic for £2.5 million a year and live in Glasgow than some unknown outfit in the Chinese league.

    Because you’re a Celtic fan.

You’re not Raga Benitez. He’s not going anywhere for £2.5m a year man :56:

A £1.5m wage cut from managing Newcastle that is

Fancied what challenge.....progressing in Europe ? the guy would have been well briefed on Celtics business model and max wages on offer and lets be frank and honest here, they wont attract anyone with the clout of a Rafa, as for Rodgers he wasnt working prior to signing with the Celts and as time proved we were a vaulting horse to something "better" in the EPL.

It’s a pointless argument anyway but all I’m saying is I would have liked to see Lawwell explore more options before he offered Lennon the job.
Nothing wrong with showing a bit of ambition.

Agreed, but options have to be realistic given the league we play in,and what we can afford to pay a manager

I have no doubt we did look at other options. Despite what Lawwell said, he was never going to say ‘aye, Lenny was 5th choice, every other * said naw’

Levels above managing Celtic? He was managing Newcastle who have won absolutely heehaw of note for decades, have been either fighting to stay in the top league or competing in the 2nd tier of English football in the past 10 year or so.

Levels above managing Celtic but not levels above managing a Chinese team.

Any player or manager that goes to China goes for one thing...pound notes.

We make an argument for Rafa coming here for a challenege because we have the emotional attachment to Celtic, so naturally we think it a no brainer to come and manage here.

If I were asked if I wanted a job at say, Basel in Switzerland, who have been dominant in the last few years (apart from the last two) or mega bucks in China, it would make my decision a bit easier.

I can see the point you are making and don't disagree with the theory. To say he is levels above managing Celtic when he has been at Newcastle though is nonsense. Basel are nowhere near as big a club as we are either.

I was more comparing it in monetary terms, not so much club stature.

Maybe just maybe we went with lenny so we could fund a better transfer kitty and wages to players just a thought

Newcastle's relegation odds have tumbled from 15-2 to 11-4 since he said he's leaving.
