With Fraudgers gone and Lenny back in the hotseat does anyone think he will see the need for a set piece specialist?

Harking back to days of yore when anytime we had a freekick in a good area or a corner there was ALWAYS a hope of a goal.

    Even more so with Nakamura.

A couple of players we have can hit them aye. But none of sufficient quality as to raise the hopes of a goal.

Our free kicks either go skyward or fail to clear the wall. And our deliveries from corners are just * shocking, thats if we just dont come short and recycle the ball around the box again.

Like the defence, it clearly wasnt an area the snake was overly interested in. Will it be for Lenny?

    More importantly... should it?

Looking at the football culture of 2019 set pieces dont seem to warrant the importance they once did. The days of Roberto Carlos, Beckham, Naka seem to have dwindled and made way for something else.
Our set pieces are what brought down Barcelona, what drove Juventus to (what should have been) a suicidal defensive tactic of wwe style wrestling in their own box (* * of a ref)

I for one dont exactly know enough about tactics to lay a stake on whether we should utilise set pieces as an actual tactic of our philiosophy....

But I'd like to have that little tingle in my balls again whenever we get a corner.

Set pieces are still incredibly pertinent to modern football, just look at Liverpool's fourth goal against Barcelona, to send them into the Champions League final.

It's not secret that our corners have been abysmal for over a couple of years now, and I never have any hope of scoring from one any more. The movement and execution of the players in the box is just as important as the player delivering the ball. Most of our players can put a ball into a dangerous area, but for whatever reason, we don't attack the delivery well enough.

As for a player who's good at hitting direct free kicks, the closest we have is Griffiths, unless I'm missing someone obvious. Nice to have, but not something we should base a signing on. Either way, whomever is assigned to hitting them, should be practicing them in training.

Shved is being quoted as having such skills. If not, then we probably need to go look in Japan. They always produce set piece takers of a high level.

Without a doubt, especially if Bayo turns out half decent and Šimunović keeps up that form.

I remember when we were always a threat at free kicks. Not just Nakamura and Larsson with the curler into the top corner but Petrov, Lambert and Alan Thompson driving it from distance in the Martin O'Neil era.

Not to mention having players with the ability to actually head the ball meant we were always a threat at free kicks.

Depends on how much Lenny wants to change the style of play.

We'd also need to sign * who are capable of actually attacking a good delivery.

We got guys who can win a header in the air sure, but not really anyone who could head with conviction at goal.

That’s it mate, need to improve on people getting on the end of corners rather than the taker.
    ( once griff is back)
Griff will also put away his fair share of free kicks. Eddy or mikey Johnson with the right footed free kicks depending on game time for mikey

Such an important part of the game, especially with the amount of set-pieces we win. I'd say a coach specifically for that role would be an effective appointment.

Someone to scout the opposition for weaknesses in both defence and attack, exploit those weaknesses with variety and surprise.

Our analyists will already Be looking st the strengths and weaknesses of the opposition from set plays I suspect, think it's more the fact we generally don't have a player who can hit an area from a corner which is chronic, how many balls hit the first man?

Being honest and I love griff but I'm hoping we sign another top CF (unlikely) and Griff isn't auto starter so hopefully Shved can take em

Yes, we have missed one under Rodgers, teams used to fear playing us because of set plays.

We got some important goals from set plays and it’s something that we have missed the last three seasons for me.

We don’t mix up set pieces anywhere near enough as we should. When was the last time we seen a cross to the edge of the box for a half volley or that?

With that being said wee changed it up a wee bit in the cup final? When the players lined up one behind the other then split off to different positions.

As people have said Griffiths is the only one that can be classed as that.

For so long now we just never seem to be a threat from any corners or freekicks.
