I hope he proves all the doubters and cynics wrong and comes back with a bang. He has got the talent he just needs a chance to prove his worth to the team.

 

NEIL LENNON put wild rumours surrounding Leigh Griffiths’ future down to 'fake news'.

Gossip doing the rounds on social media suggested Celts were on the verge of sacking Griffiths.

But the speculation was completely unfounded with Hoops sources telling SunSport Online that the striker – who has been sidelined for months as he battles personal issues – is working harder than ever behind the scenes to return to the pitch.

And Lennon – who appeared unaware of the online noise – hit out at the trolls, insisting the 28-year-old is doing all the right things as he nears a first-team comeback.

However, the Parkhead boss revealed the final league game of the season against Hearts would come too soon for the Scotland hero.

Asked about the rumours, Lennon blasted: “It’s just complete nonsense.

“It’s social media so we’re in an age of fake news and people want to start trouble for people and I think Leigh gets more than his fair share of negativity.

“He’s working very, very hard. He was in yesterday, he was in today.

“His condition is improving all the time. We’re hoping that he’ll hopefully start training out on the grass next week. In terms of stuff away from the club, his behaviour has been impeccable.”

On the prospect of Griffiths featuring on title day, he added: “Well it’s not realistic to be honest with you because he’s been out for so long and he’s not really interacted with the group in terms of his football side of things.

“It’s just a case of getting him physically fit and in really good condition. He’s worked really, really hard over the last couple of months.

“So where these stories are coming from, I’m sorry… it’s just complete nonsense.”

 

The press really are a bunch of horrible * in this country, and that wee * McManus is to blame for his not so cryptic tweet. Rat * the lot of them.

Neil Lennon has told Leigh Griffiths to ignore the online trolls and focus on getting back on the pitch.

The Celtic boss admitted the striker is unlikely to feature again this season but slammed the Internet rumours doing the rounds the hitman had been binned by the club.



Lennon said: “Leigh’s doing very well. He’s in good shape and we’re hoping to get him on the grass pitch next week.

“He’s worked very hard and his behaviour away from the club since I came in has been impeccable. He just has to ignore all the nonsense


We’re human beings at the end of the day and it can hurt. Leigh is a strong character and he has been through a really tough time.

“The club and Leigh are doing all we can to get him back playing and doing what he does best. I’d prefer him not to react to it and to stay away from social media.

Lennon had hoped to get Griff game time before the end of term but confirmed next week’s final league game against Hearts and the Scottish Cup Final will likely be out of reach.

He said: “It’ll probably be too soon. He’s been out for a considerable length of time and isn’t training with the group yet.”

 

Great to see him getting a big cheer from the crowd today. His health comes first, but it's so important for Celtic to get a player like him fit and ready to go.
