When John McGinn slipped through the net for Celtic in the August transfer window, a door was opened as another closed.

Ryan Christie came in from the cold, defying his doubters to become an integral part of Celtic’s talented midfield.

But, at the same time, Christie’s proposed move to Hibs crumbled to dust in front of Neil Lennon’s eyes.

Now, with Lennon returning to Celtic, it has come full circle.

Christie, the one who got away, is now working under him at Parkhead.

The 24-year-old continued his comeback from injury on Wednesday night against St Mirren with a 27-minute cameo and a goal.

His triumphant return may have been marred after Buddies keeper Vaclav Hladky was left shaken by a firework thrown onto the pitch.

But he’s back and Lennon couldn’t be happier.

The Hoops boss said: “I’m delighted to get Ryan back on the pitch. I’ve enjoyed working with him.

“He gave us all a lift on Wednesday at St Mirren.

“He had good energy about him – he’s quality.

“I tried to get Ryan to Hibs at the start of the season before he had made his impact at Parkhead.

There was talk of John McGinn signing for Celtic and we were keen to take Ryan the other way to Hibs.

“It has obviously worked out well for him and I’m looking forward to seeing more of him on the pitch.

“Ryan was a real catalyst, once he got into the Celtic team, for a lot of good performances.

“The one that sticks out is the League Cup semi-final against Hearts when his second-half performance was superb. The team went on to have a great win that day and he hasn’t looked back.”

Lennon pointed to Scotland’s tragic double-header against Kazakhstan and San Marino, which Christie missed during his lay-off, as a sign of how important he can be.

And the Hoops gaffer reckons his ability to bounce back from injury encapsulates his hunger to perform.

Lennon added: “When they join such a big club, players can be written off very quickly. Maybe that was the case for Ryan.

“But he has improved in a physical sense, his professionalism is good and he’s a good talent.

“Scotland missed him in the recent games. He would have been ideal for what Alex McLeish is trying to do.

“He is a good, young Scottish player and hopefully there is a lot more to come from him.

“He came back from injury quicker than expected and that speaks volumes for his desire to get back in the team.”

He's got the smell of a CalMac about him.

If he continues this development, we could have such a wonderfully talented and technically superior midefield with McGregor and Christie.

I certainly like the look of them and Rogic as the core of our central midfield for many years to come.

Midfielder Ryan Christie has suffered a suspected broken cheekbone or eye socket after a aerial collision with Aberdeen's Dominic Ball during Celtic's Scottish Cup semi-final win.

Ball was shown a second yellow for the foul on Christie, who was treated on the pitch for several minutes towards the end of the first half. He was carried off with his neck in a brace.

"We saw him at half time and he was conscious. We think it's either a broken eye socket or a broken cheekbone," said manager Neil Lennon.

Lennon said he expects Christie to be fit for that game on 25 May and that the decision to send off Ball was the right one.

"It was a horrendous coming together and I don't think there was any deliberation over it. It was a definite second yellow," he told BBC Scotland.

The incident had similarities to December's League Cup final at the same venue between these sides, when Aberdeen's Gary Mackay-Steven was knocked out after a clash of heads with Celtic's Dedryck Boyata.

: "He was conscious at half-time so we are not sure whether it’s a broken eye socket or a fractured cheek bone. The medical team are hoping he’ll be fit for the cup final when it comes around. He's looking at 3/4 weeks out.

Beautiful Sunday - the IRA version
Yet another serious injury to one of our players.

In my mind, I have a starting XI I'd like to see every week. It's the team that beat Leipzig at home and was part of that great run in October-November that included the 5-0 against Hearts, 5-0 against Killie and 6-0 against St Hunstone.

But that team cannot play every week since we seem to have injuries - to key players - practically every week.

We've gone massive chunks of the season without two fit strikers, Rogic, Tierney, Christie and our CBs.

    Ridiculous.
