Celtic manager Neil Lennon has played down reports that Dedryck Boyata has agreed to join Hertha Berlin in the summer.

It was suggested on Saturday in the German media that the Bundesliga club are confident of agreeing terms with Boyata on a pre-contract.

The Belgian centre-back is set to become a free agent at the end of the season and it had seemed previously that Lennon was resigned to losing him.

After Boyata limped out of last weekend's Old Firm match, the Parkhead boss admitted that the 28-year-old may have played his last game for Celtic.

That stance appeared to have changed, though, with Lennon revealing that the club have not yet given up hope of extending the player's stay beyond the summer.

Speaking after his side's goalless home draw with Livingston, Lennon said: 'I'm not aware of that (a deal being agreed with Hertha). Dedryck was here at the game today.

'I wouldn't be surprised if there is interest in him but we are still hopeful that we can persuade him to stay, which would be great for everyone.

He should have been sold back in August regardless of the qualifiers etc.

This was always going to happen so I couldn't care less tbh.

If Lenny's soundbites about hoping to keep this * on are true, then he's seriously misjudged the mood of the support!

I'm not interested in any cute deals where the player signs on, gets sold in the first transfer window, and the funds are split - I want him told NOW not to bother coming back to the club!

    *!

No one at the club is gonna confirm it or that he's desperate to get away after the fiasco at the start of the season, are they..

    He's long gone..

Hope we rush him back for ibrox. Play him half fit and keep playing the ball to him for one last farewell to Rodgers reign.

I rate him and like him but he won't really be a miss, he always missed about 20 games a season with injury and he never really played in the CL qualifiers in the 4 seasons he was here, he was always injured - the Last CL qualifying match he played for us was in 2015 so he's not really going to hold us back.

Mental really that of the 25 European games he played for us 18 were in the Group Stage/Knockout Rounds and only 7 were Qualifiers.

He missed 18 out of 24 CL Qualifiers.

This season and the last 2 seasons we'll have had 183 games and he only played in 93 of them.

If he was this fantastic player Rodgers thought he was we would have many large teams knocking at our door. It cannot be that every decent club passed on him even if he is free

The fact he is a belgian international means nothing. Even the best Brazil and Argentina sides had one or two donkeys that wouldnt be good enough for Celtic

The bit in bold should be enough for Lenny to removed from the post immediately, if true.

‘The club’ not Lenny himself, interestingly.

A decision like that would be above Lennon even if he didn't see a long-term future for Boyata. A multi-million pound asset is walking out the door for free because of our previous rat of a manager. Lawwell would love nothing more than him signing a new deal to then punt him to the highest bidder in a few months.
