Celtic quick news : "I was delighted at Ajax performance and 1-4 win in the Bernabeu last night. It was a victory for clubs in small nations everywhere, who have been disenfranchised by leagues with more valuable television contracts. This was not a backs against the wall performance, like our win over Barcelona in 2012, Ajax attacked relentlessly, they could have scored more.

When Dutch fans left the Johan Cruyff Arena last month, having watched Real Madrid secure a 1-2 victory, they must have assumed their European adventure was over for this season, but they would have consoled themselves with the knowledge that at least they did better than last season. Then, they were beaten home and away in the Europa League qualifiers by Rosenborg, just two weeks after Celtic dumped Rosenborg out of the Champions League qualifiers.

A glass ceiling exists for clubs from the smaller leagues, and when Brendan Rodgers left the building last week, the point was made to me that perhaps group stage fodder in the Champions League is the new limit for a club with Celtic’s resources.

What Ajax have established is that it is very difficult for clubs like them and Celtic to perform consistently well in Europe. Good players will leave quickly, replacing with players of a similar standard is haphazard, but while an occasional defeat to the likes of Rosenborg (or AEK) will happen, the ceiling is significantly higher than one win and five defeats in the Champions League group stage. We should not be cannon fodder".

All efforts at Celtic right now are focussed on winning the league and Scottish Cup, but by the summer, the club will have set their ambitions for the medium-term. By any reasonable measure, Brendan was a roaring success, but for the money (football budget, not just his wage), we could do much better in the Champions League. Ajax will force us to ask some harder questions. Winning 10-in-a-row will be an historic high, but it is not the only yardstick in town.

People often say we punch above our weight Europe, but I would say we have only done that once this decade in Lennon's third season

Without European football we can always expect about £61-64million
£30million in Matchday Income (Tickets etc)
    £16million in Merchandise
    £12million in Sponsorship/Advertising
    £3.5million in Domestic TV Money

    They get about £75-79million
    £29million in Matchday Income
    £12million in Merchandise
    £24million in Sponsorship/Advertising
    £9.7million in Domestic TV Money

That's how they compare to us financially if people were wondering, they have about £15million more guarenteed income so not massive but a decent amount.

They are probably mostly helped though that their players are Dutch and quite valuable just based on the historical evidence of Dutch players being good so they can spend a lot more money on players knowing that when they sell players they go for a lot of money.

Thats really the main difference between us, they get so much more money for players than we do.So they can spend much more knowing they're going to get good money for players regardless.

If we sold Riedewald, Bazoer, Klaassen and El Ghazi we'd have been lucky to get £20million as they are very average players technically and nothing special but cause they were young(ish) Dutch players from Ajax they got like £50million odd for them.

Klaassen was like their version of an Armstrong not really any better and they got over 3x what we got for Armstong. Those other 3 aren't even that good and didnt get a game for them and wouldn't get a game for us but went for much more than we'd get for the likes of Ralston, Henderson and Johnston.

They also sold a player to Reading so must have got at least £100 million for him

netherlands although a small nation they are much bigger than scotland population wise and have a purist idea of football that has served them historically well

surprised they only get just under £10m in tv money

allthough small compared to spanish german italian english and french leagues, the dutch are still much bigger and better football playing leagues than us unfortunately, we have to improve the grass roots, apart from celtic all the other clubs arent doing enough and we need to drop the physical approach, its not served the national team or the club teams at all when playing foreign opponents

It’s also evidence that you can implement and maintain a footballing style without having to revert to ultra defensive hoofball.

Anyone have a link to the match in its entirety? I missed it. Only saw the goals (very impressive and commendable attacking play, from what I watched).

Good OP, btw. A lot of valid points raised.

I’m guessing but I think it’s probably better coaching throughout the club.

One thing I think / hope we do this summer is get a coaching team in place that will outlast managers. Make them responsible for coaching from age 10 to the first team, everything from attitude, nutrition and football technique.

Their academy is also rolling out future world class talent like De Jong and De Ligt.

Duch players are better than Scottish players.

De Jong is Barca bound, De Ligt probably will be too. Tadic, Neres and Blind were bought for big fees as well.

I wouldn’t even say we’re a million miles behind them and would fancy our chances if we drew them in the CL/EL.

Surely if it was that easy every club outside of the richest clubs would just copy it.

Im sure its similar to barcelona where they play one system from youth right to the first team thats why youngsters hardly look out of place at barca and ajax
