I'll buck the trend and say do not get Lagavulin or Caol Ila as a present for someone unless you know for sure they like peated whiskies. I've known people put off whisky for life because their introdution to whisky was an Islay malt. Personally I really like them, but I would never buy one for someone if I wasn't sure they like that flavour profile.

If he’s specifically purchasing whisky as a gift I’d suggest the recipient is a whisky lover!

Feel like a fraud being so patriotic yet I can’t drink whisky :99:

Any pointers where to start? Or if I don’t like it now am I a lost cause?

I know plenty of whisky lovers that can't stand peated whiskies. I wouldn't buy an Islay malt for anyone I didn't already know liked them.

I’ve only started having the odd one in my 30’s. I started (heathen) with just standard pub whisky with water in it after I’d had a couple pints and started to come round to the taste of it.

    Fair comment.

What have you tried you didn't like? I'd suggest going to a tasting night, depending where you are. Speyside and lowland malts are generally more beginner friendly.

Out of curiosity (and boredom) I checked their website, to see what their range is like and I think you want to steer clear. The Lagavulin 16 (if you were still going for that) works out around £69, which is £20 more than you can get it here for, that wasn't even the litre bottle you often get at duty frees, just the standard 70cl. Most of them seem to be really rather expensive. That's not to say they won't be doing some special deals on the day though that might be good.

No specifics in terms of brands tbh. Just a general bleuch.

    Cheers for the ideas :50:

I only ever buy * and grey goose from Dubai and they are waay cheaper, think 1L grey goose works out at £40 or something, as I said I never really browsed the whiskey section.

Will just pick it up here then.

Highland Park 12 is an easy drinking dram, Balvennie 12 is also nice, for a blended whisky you canny go wrong with Johnnie Walker black label.

    So many to choose from.

If you are in or around Glasgow the Good Spirits co are doing a whisky tasting on the 30th of November. Tickets aren't cheap though at £25 but it is cheaper than buying a bottle you might not like and you'd get to try a range and see if there is anything you do like. For people new to whisky I'd usually suggest something like Old Pulteney, Auchentoshan, Balvennie or Dalmore as they are not overpowering and have decent flavour. You can usually get a bottle of Old Puteney 12 for around £24/£25 from supermarket deals.

If you are new to whisky avoid Lagavulin, it's a crackin dram but not for the faint hearted lol.

Not a fan of the peaty whiskies,I prefer single malts. I like the Glengoyne whiskies got a 12 & 15 year old in the kitchen.. Like a Jamiesons and coke aswell.

Whilst this thread is on the go, I was in a new joint in Broughty Ferry, fancy place called the Wine Spa and they had this in a cabinet built into the bar... Dalmore Aged 35 years

I’ve tried the 25 yo one. Free samples in heathrow airport. it worked out about £60 a shot, although we were only getting little sip tasters. Lots of Chinese guys buying it.
It was * rank. Just don’t think whiskey is for me
