The ultras have a right to protest.

    After everything that’s went on.

I was talking about their original actions of attacking the players. That has helped get them in this mess.

Aye if losing your biggest players is what you call working, aye they are passionate but they went a step too far for me. But their chairman is a * moon unit!

This has never happened at Sporting before, we’ve never had our own players physically attacked by a group of our own hooligans (won’t use the word fans) before. I can speak for every true Sporting supporter when I say that we’re appalled and terribly embarrassed by all of this.

In Portugal, there are around 3.5 million Sporting supporters in a country of 11 million (plus the many other supporters found in the global Portuguese diaspora) and around 40 idiot hooligans (who are almost all sitting in jail as I write this) from Juve Leo (ultra group) did this. These morons and their actions do not represent our club and our fanbase and they and what they did are reviled by 99.99% of all Sporting supporters.

The best thing that came of this is that after this incident there was an emergency vote and Bruno de Carvalho, Sporting’s President who presided over this black mark on our history was destituted and voted out of power by a very large margin, a transitional council is currently running the club and new Presidential elections are set for Sept. 8.

We ended up losing three players and internationals of note: goalkeeper Rui Patricio went to Wolverhampton, William Carvalho went to Real Betis and winger Gelson Martins went to Atletico Madrid. Three others left but they were fringe players and their departures won’t affect the club. The good news is that star striker Bas Dost, midfielder Battaglia and midfield dynamo, Bruno Fernandes all came back to the club after initially unilaterally rescinding their contracts.

The vast majority of Sporting supporters place the blame for all of this squarely on former President Bruno de Carvalho (who had close connections to the ultra groups, especially Juve Leo) and for his creation of an intimidating and pressure filled environment on what he considered an underperforming, yet excellent and expensive team, who on paper, could have won the league.

However, there’s still dissappointment towards the defectors because of the possibility that they utilized this situation to get big pay raises and are now playing in England and Spain. Rui Patricio, William Carvalho and Gelson Martins had all wanted to be sold/transferred in the past and even though what they experienced was terrible, many feel that they turned their backs on the club that put them on the map, as they were academy products who grew up at the club and took advantage of the situation to move abroad....without Sporting getting financially compensated for their transfers.....and this is what has upset the Sporting faithful.

Regardless, it’s an absolutely awful situation that did not need to happen, and we’re just looking forward to the new election and to putting this behind us and ensuring it never happens again.

From this past weekend outside of Sporting vs Benfica ending in a tie, the other game involving one of the Big Three was Porto losing at home to a never say die Vitoria de Guimaraes (a very historic club) from the north...Porto lost 2-3...I actually stopped watching when they were up 2-0, and dissapointingly didn’t see Vitoria score three goals...but we have highlights...and they’re awesome....

The Finances of the Portuguese Big 3

    Benfica
    Assets: 485.1M€
    Debt: 398.3M€
    Equity: +86.8M€

    Porto
    Assets: 426M€
    Debt: 464.1M€
    Equity: -38.1M€

    Sporting
    Assets: 269.2M€
Debt: 282.5M€ (in reality the debt is higher as there are more than 100M€ outstanding mandatorily convertible securities; debt plus mandatorily convertible securities totals 410.4M€)
    Equity: -13.3M€

Net results of the last 3 financial exercises:
    Benfica: +20.4M€ (2015/16), +44.5M€ (2016/17), +20.6M€ (2017/18) = +85.5M€
    Porto: -58.3M€ (2015/16), -35.3M€ (2016/17), -28.4M€ (2017/18) = -122M€

Debt over the last 3 financial exercises:
    Benfica: 455.5M€ (2015/16), 438.3M€ (2016/17), 398.3M€ (2017/18) = -57.2M€
    Porto: 349.0M€ (2015/16), 387.6M€ (2016/17), 464.2M€ (2017/18) = +115.2M€

While Benfica decided to tackle its debt, Porto is under financial fair play and is facing historically high losses. The general increase in Champions League revenues might be their salvation board.

So...big news out of Portugal, specifically Sporting...former, ousted President, Bruno de Carvalho was arrested yesterday and is being held until his hearing tomorrow...facing charges on over 50 counts...specifically related to the attack on Sporting’s players at the end of last season.

After the attack, 30+ plus of the hooligans who invaded Sporting’s training facilities and attacked the players and coaches have been held in prison and have also been cooperating with investigators...and they’ve been singing like canaries.

Turns out the order to hit the players allegedly came from Bruno de Carvalho himself...two specific phone calls from Carvalho to the top two ranking leaders of big and influential Sporting Ultra group, Juve Leo.

Some of the charges against Carvalho include incitement of violence and assault, terrorism, etc. things look bleak for the former president, but what he did was criminal and absolutely unconscionable. The damage he did to the club was of tremendous magnitude...glad justice is being pursued.

Ironically today, Sporting President, Frederico Varandas presented Sporting’s new coach: Marcel Keizer (former Ajax coach). Verandas let go of José Peseiro last week...time for a fresh start on all fronts. Even with everything that’s happened, we’re in second place in the league, two points behind Porto and in second place in our EL group, behind Arsenal...I’ll take it.

For those that might be interested, today in 1986, Sporting punished Benfica 7-1 in a memorable Lisbon derby...the green and white half of Lisbon is having a toast as I write this...

Looks like Benfica are leapfrogging Braga, 6-1 up with 25 mins left.

    6 different scorers as well.
