The proportion of 16-24 year olds who don’t drink alcohol has increased from 18% in 2005 to 29% in 2015, according to UCL research.

Researchers at University College London analysed data from the annual Health Survey for England and found an increasing trend of people who had never been drinkers: from 9% in 2005 to 17% in 2015. Even binge drinking is on the decline: with significant decreases in the number of young people who drank above recommended limits (from 43% to 28%) or who binge drank (27% to 18%).

Dr Linda Ng Fat, corresponding author of the study said: ‘The increase in young people who choose not to drink alcohol suggests that this behaviour maybe becoming more acceptable, whereas risky behaviours such as binge drinking may be becoming less normalised.’ ‘Increases in non-drinking among young people were found across a broad range of groups, including those living in northern or southern regions of England, among the white population, those in full-time education, in employment and across all social classes and healthier groups.

That the increase in non-drinking was found across many different groups suggests that non-drinking may becoming more mainstream among young people which could be caused by cultural factors.’ ‘These trends are to be welcomed from a public-health standpoint. Factors influencing the shift away from drinking should be capitalised on going forward to ensure that healthier drinking behaviours in young people continue to be encouraged.’

The researchers examined data on 9,699 people aged 16-24 years collected as part of the Health Survey for England 2005-2015, an annual, cross-sectional, nationally representative survey looking at changes in the health and lifestyles of people across England. I'd take a guess that a fair amount more young people are into smoking weed instead these days, would probably explain a decline in drinking.

Arguably a lot healthier, if they're not also smoking tobacco with it.

I remember back in the day, when every young team had their own web page with cringey photos of it, doing the 'Broony' pose with a bottle of tonic in their hand. :giggle1:

Was watching a programme on Netflix last night about alcohol giants pumping money into campaigns in the states to back anti legalisation of weed campaigns by Christian groups and Governers. The Yanks are well awake to it and the smoking community is screaming from the rooftops. The alcohol companies know and fear the fall in sales of alcohol and statistics show that the sale of weed and the use to help recovering alcoholics is a massive threat to their trade. Take a lot longer to kill yourself smoking than you would drinking. That is obviously the hold up in the legalisation in the U.K. and Ireland.

    * me, I’m not even from Glesga and ran with a Young Team when i was over and that was before internet. * started me on some bad habits. Well good times. Bet the Young Team are all out getting chest waxes, swapping health tips and holding push up competitions to get the girl. Back then the craziest * that could still stand after two bottles of Thunderbird and two tins of Super T whilst smoking got the gal. What a catch. I got on with every * in the YT but there was 2 I stepped back from when they were * up. And every idea they had was not the best.

@Sean Daleer or any older guys remember a place at Tollcross called Dirty Dicks pub. Don’t think it was the given name but more a pet name. Played snooker out the back behind a curtain. I’d say a few people were taken there for a slap. Would serve any * at any age. I was drinking in it at 15. Across from the Crystal Bell pub.

With prices here unless you're minted that ain't happening. Vaporizers are the way to go to avoid tobacco. Not the stupid pens but a proper one.

Still wouldn't recommend anyone under 18 smoking it though as it should be regulated like alcohol.

Ahhh so it's an England thing, not the Uk. No one has researched Wales, Scotland or the north of Ireland.
