Europe’s march towards a post-Christian society has been starkly illustrated by research showing a majority of young people in a dozen countries do not follow a religion.

The survey of 16- to 29-year-olds found the Czech Republic is the least religious country in Europe, with 91% of that age group saying they have no religious affiliation. Between 70% and 80% of young adults in Estonia, Sweden and the Netherlands also categorise themselves as non-religious.

The most religious country is Poland, where 17% of young adults define themselves as non-religious, followed by Lithuania with 25%.

In the UK, only 7% of young adults identify as Anglican, fewer than the 10% who categorise themselves as Catholic. Young Muslims, at 6%, are on the brink of overtaking those who consider themselves part of the country’s established church.

The figures are published in a report, Europe’s Young Adults and Religion, by Stephen Bullivant, a professor of theology and the sociology of religion at St Mary’s University in London. They are based on data from the European social survey 2014-16.

Religion was “moribund”, he said. “With some notable exceptions, young adults increasingly are not identifying with or practising religion.”

The trajectory was likely to become more marked. “Christianity as a default, as a norm, is gone, and probably gone for good – or at least for the next 100 years,” Bullivant said.

But there were significant variations, he said. “Countries that are next door to one another, with similar cultural backgrounds and histories, have wildly different religious profiles.”

Good. Hopefully every other religion follows.

    Jaysus!

Capitalism has replaced Christianity. This while Muslim flourishes under a drive that Christianity experienced 100 years ago. No coincidence that the Muslim Religion and capitalism don’t mix too well.

Be interesting to see the figures for the US, knowing how much they abide to the Ten Commandments, especially that little one “Thou shalt not kill”!

And rightly so. Its caused havoc all over the world it did however in the next few decades, muslims will be taking over wether we like it or not. They are breeding us out massively and if i live to see 100, there will be massive changes to our whole way of life with them taking over councils, into government etc... Just wish to * people would wise the * up and do away with all religions so mankind can move forward instead of all slaughtering the * out of each other.

People were doing this before religion, would have done it without religion and will continue to do it if all religion dies out.

Well! Ahem! Westernised sins. At the end of the day it’s all about the money. Commercialised Religion is selling you peace of mind. Look at how many people leave their estate to the church.

Important to note the ratio of christian to non-christian religious rather than the growth of 'non religious'. It is almost as if talk of swarms of young muslim invaders taking over Europe is utter bollocks!

On religion in general, I dont think 'non religious' necessarily equates to not believing in a * or having no faith. But just as class, national, racial and sexual identities have become much more fluid and less defined, so have views on theology. Young people have broader influences and more access to information so like everything else they will pick and choose the best bits of theology without feeling it necessary to commit to any single faith. That is how I personally see faith.

Would be interesting to see if the figures correlate with the advent of widespread accessible TV ( cable/sky ) and the internet.

I tend to agree with the fact that Religion has declined because of the internet and availability of information. Before this churches could manipulate a congregation or a section of people without question or opposition.

How come Italy, Greece, Romania, Austria etc. aren’t included. Probably quite a few others.
    They not fit the narrative?
