We played Guimares a few years before as well. I was actually booked to go on the flight the club had put on but they canceled as they we couldn't fill it.

Been to Benfica away though and had a great time over in Lisbon. ( though obviously we got beat)

I don't know if that's the video but there's one online of Lawrenson and the main commentator when the goal goes in and you can tell how sick they are talking about the keeper being poor and it being scuffed blah blah blah :56:

I'm sure we beat Guimares home and away 10 year or so ago as well as the famous Boavista game..

I actually grew up by an area called little Portugal and the majority were overwhelmingly Benfica. Bars/cafe's would be packed for big game's anytime you went by. A from the island of Madeira for some reason I've found..

Is it the same in Lisbon, I mean do Benfica dwarf Sporting's support in the city as they seem to do worldwide?

It's a good game, Porto scored first, then Doumbia (Sporting's striker) got injured and was subbed off, and young starlet Rafel Leao came on for him and immediately scored, leaving it 1-1 at the half. At 49 minutes, Brahimi scored for Porto, currently 2-1. I'm annoyed.....good game though

    Here's a good stream:

Benfica has the most support in Portugal, stemming from the great Benfica sides of the 60's, Sporting is second in support, and Lisbon is split fairly evenly in Sporting/Benfica support, maybe a bit more to Benfica, but not a great disparity. There's a green side to Lisbon and a red side to Lisbon, but in no way is there a great disparity in the city. For some reason, many of the Portuguese immigrant community are Benfica.

I'm from Madeira actually, and there are definitely a lot of Benfica supporters from there, but there's also a Sporting contigent.

Would the Benfica side be from the poorer part's of the city moreso then?

Ah fair enough mate. It's what I've found from personal experience here..

To put it delicately, from a historical perspective, Benfica was the "people's team", the working class team, which I guess explains it's popularity within the immigrant community. Sporting was literally founded by Portuguese royalty and was the team of the elite and the academics. In modern times, those distinctions have been blurred, and there are supporters from all walks of life and social standings for both sides, but Sporting does have the perception of being the less working class team.

Well, that sucked. Final 2-1, in Porto's favor. Barring a major collapse, looks like Porto will be taking the league this year, they've been unstoppable, and it is infinitely frustrating for me. Looks like I'll be pulling for Benfica to beat them in the next Classico and for Porto to make a mistake or much more preferably... two (let's go major collapse!). Anything can happen I guess. This is the problem when you have three strong clubs with very little between them vying for the title.

Now, looking forward to Celtic tomorrow......:ynwacelti

Very sad to see the Portuguese league struggling like that similar to us, despite being able to tap into South America so well..

Porto unbeaten and still pumped 5 nil at home to Liverpool. Don't like Porto but just shows how far the Scottish league's been left behind when the Portuguese one is miles off also..

    Benfica 0-1 Porto

In an awful game of football the most ambitious manager won.

    Porto's title to lose.

That’s very cool, always great to see the Portuguese clubs come to the US, as there’s a built in Portuguese-American fan base. Reminds me of when I saw Sporting vs Celtic 8 years ago for the Football at Fenway game in Boston.

@The GOAT, Forum question....apologies, if I didn’t search correctly and missed it, but is there a Portuguese Leagues 2018-2019 thread? Would love to contribute to it and for those that are interested in Portuguese football. I know that there’s one other Portuguese forum member here too! :60:

Think has a lot to do with a large number of their players being able to walk away to other clubs. Though that doesn’t condone their ultras actions or the crazy * of a chairman’s.
