Thank you! much appreciated...silverware is good. The title race is tough, as Sporting, Porto and Benfica are all within close proximity of each other...it's a matter of who slips up...

    Yeah it’s really close.

Porto 4 points clear if they win their game in hand. Still plenty of time left to make up that difference though.

    Good luck :shamrock:

And.........both Porto and Benfica tied their games this week, allowing Sporting to jump into first place if they win tonight against Vitoria de Guimaraes tonight (with Porto still with their game in hand). Hope to make some mandatory headway tonight.

Jeremy Mattieu scored in the 84th minute, so we ended up winning 1-0...

How is Mathieu playing? I always liked him at Valencia but he never really worked out at Barcelona but he's got a good left-foot and capable of scoring goals.

Mathieu is an absolute beast, has been one of Sporting's most utilized players this year, outstanding defender and leaving Barcelona to become an undisputed starter at Sporting was a fantastic move for club and player.

    Looks like an unorthodox finish.

Here's how the table stands now. Porto still unbeaten (they have to lose once right?) Sporting and Benfica have the same number of points, but Benfica have a better goal differential...this is a super tight race...huge crunch game this Friday...Sporting plays Porto @ Porto. If Sporting wins, it gets very interesting with major implications for Porto's cushion/lead. Sporting also have a home match against Benfica in the penultimate game of the season and Benfica play Porto one more time...exciting games for sure.

Absolutely huge clash tonight (starting in more or less an hour and a half). Sporting vs. Porto @ the Dragao. Major implications for either team today, whether it's win or lose. A draw will help Benfica. Can't wait for this.....

Looks like Seydou Doumbia will be starting for Sporting in place of the unfortunately injured Bas Dost...

Didn't realise Porto were undefeated in the league.

Yeah, those * aren't making things easy. I was surprised at the drubbing they took by Liverpool, but in the league they're solid. Sporting and Benfica have only lost one game apiece, this season is so frustratingly tight, literally waiting for someone to slip up, and it needs to happen tonight...to Porto.

What's the standard like, below the top 4?

The standard below the top 4 drops down fairly precipitously. The smaller clubs have no way of competing with the big three of Sporting, Porto and Benfica, and with Braga, which is the fourth biggest club. Braga is also financially more powerful than all the other smaller clubs. The thing with the smaller Portuguese clubs though is that while they don't have big names and budgets, they all play very technically sound football and when they play the Big three, they park the * out of the bus and strike on the counter and they can surprise you every once in a while (given the disparity in budget). The smaller Portuguese clubs also get inexpensive and unknown Brazilian talent, who want to make a name for themselves in the Portuguese league to get snapped up by the big Portuguese clubs or by other big clubs in Europe.

With that being said, there are a couple of Portuguese clubs who should be "bigger and better" than they are at the moment. Clubs like Boavista and Vitoria de Guimaraes, are not "small" clubs and should be regularly challenging Braga for 4th spot ranking. Unfortunately, Boavista was relegated a while back because of corruption charges and while they're back in the Primeira Liga, it's going to take a while to get them back to where they were, especially in Europe, as they were a regular presence in the UEFA Cup and even in the Champion's League. Boavista were Uefa Cup semi finalists in 2002-2003 and were quarter finalists in 1993-1994. Guimaraes have a large following, a big stadium and they are a very historical team, but they haven't been able to usurp Braga from being considered the fourth power in Portugal.

Outside of the Big three of Sporting, Benfica and Porto, and Braga as fourth, the teams are all fairly similar in budget and ability, so it's all about who has better coaching and squads who are in form. Rio Ave has been very competitive in recent years and again, Guimaraes has the infrastructure, budget and history to be bigger than they appear to be. However, almost every Portuguese person, even the ones who follow their local teams will usually follow one of the Big three.
