Whose your hero?

Who do you idolize, or grow up idolizing?

Think a thread would provide a good platform to perhaps learn about a cause or a person who went beyond the call of duty in an effort to better the world. Try to keep it non-sport related, I think we all have a Henrik Larsson or a Bobby Orr we celebrated; but someone outside of sport who did outstanding things need recognition as well.

My hero is Terry Fox, who I would also say is the greatest Canadian to have ever lived. If you are unaware of him, Terry was a 22 year old man who lost his leg due to bone cancer in the late 1970's. Because of his age, he was exposed to seeing children around him pass as a result of cancer, and became determined to raise awareness for cancer research (which at the time was very little, and asa result outcomes were extremely poor). He began his "Marathon of Hope" in 1980, with a goal to run across Canada on one leg. He ran a marathon a day, and made it over halfway across Canada (beginning in St Johns, Newfoundland and finishing in Thunder Bay, Ontario). Sadly, his cancer had spread into his lungs, and he was unable to finish his journey across Canada. He passed away in 1981, aged just 22. His initial aim of $1 million in donations was eclipsed, and he managed to raise over $23 million from donations worldwide. Canada still celebrates Terry Fox day every year, with the hopes of continuing his great cause.



One of the main reasons I thought of this thread was the feeling that people like him are becoming forgotten, as well as few and far between in today's society. I'd like to hear from others on here about who they idolize and what they did that was so impactful for them.

he asked me one weekend if i wanted to go for a pint but i was too busy ....... never got to go for a pint again .

Non famous idol.....ally boyd. Met him at a TCT (teenage cancer trust) trip away and he was the best. Went through it all with a smile
Went into remission then diagnosed again terminally and raised 75k+ while very ill
Put my * into check. Some man whom id only known a very short while and made the biggest impact.

My old man always taught me no person is better..

So I guess he would be.. shhh tho..

 

My father has had the biggest influence on my life.

But as hero it's either Brendan Hughes or henrik larsson.

I only ever got to have 1 pint with my Da'. We were in the pub before we went to the game v Barca, when Henrik scored against us. I was shocked because I was only 16 at the time, but I felt absolutely buzzing about standing with my Dad having a beer.

My dad too. Coal miner, hard as nails but soft as a brush with his four boys.

True Dad.

 

My grandfather, lost his voicebox to cancer when he was young in life but beat it and even though he suffered from a heartattack in his 60s needing a triple bypass he still goes out and referees young lads in football every week. He’s lost children and siblings but never seen him even have a lie in nevermind a day off.

Don’t spend as much time with him as I should because his house attracts a lot of the family I don’t like but whenever I’m down I’ll have a cup of tea and talk football with him. Great man.

Some of the Dublin lads on here may have been reffed by him before.

 

Probably my daughter, so proud of the * she is growing to be, personable, intelligent and mad for the Celtic
