Celts Play Flowing Football Before 'Well Fight Back

Today at the ground where Celtic infamously lost the league, on the last day of the season, they produced some of the finest football under manager Gordon Strachan.

The team which started was somewhat different from the usual starting eleven. Under fire Mark Wilson was put back to his natural side at right back and nearly forgotten Lee Naylor was back in on his favoured left back slot. The midfield that Celtic put on today looked incredibly strong - and that was only on paper. Maloney, Robson Crosas and Scott Brown made up the midfield four and showed Celtic's strength in depth with having Nakamura and McGeady on the bench. Young Barcelona starlet, Crosas, made his first start for the team and was looking to impress while top scorer from last season, Scott McDonald, was upfront with top scorer from this season, Georgios Samaras.

Mixed fortunes for Hoops internationals

Qualifying for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa had its turn ahead of the start of the domestic season this past week, and a large chunk of Gordon Strachan’s Celtic squad had to make the trips abroad to represent their countries, just days before the Hoops face an important trip to Fir Park in the SPL and get their Champions League campaign underway.

Skippy eyeing quickfire return

Celtic striker Scott McDonald is planning on making his return from a minor groin tear this weekend as the Hoops make the trip to Fir Park to take on Motherwell in their first match since the damaging 4-2 defeat at home to Rangers in the opening Old Firm match of the season.

“Things are going well,” McDonald explained to Celtic View, in an interview for the popular magazine.

“Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to go with the Australia squad this week, but that has allowed for a better recovery time for me.

“I’ve been doing a bit of running and hopefully I can start training with the boys when they return from the international break.”

Celtic goalkeeper Artur Boruc could be in hot water after the Scottish Football Association disciplinary committee's decision to haul the fan's favourite in front of the committee to explain an alleged gesture made to Rangers fans.

The Polish international was called Tuesday to appear before the panel on Sept. 16 after news photographs captured him making the one-fingered gesture. The alleged incident occurred after the Old Firm derby on August 31.

Celtic lost 4-2 in what was an ill-tempered affair, with Boruc at fault for two of Rangers goals. The highly-rated Polish international is thought to be going through a turbulent time regrading off the pitch affairs.

A statement on the SFA's website regarding the incident read:

No rest for Celtic stars as World Cup qualifying takes centre stage

Just six days after Celtic suffered an embarrassing defeat at the hands of Rangers in the first Old Firm match of the season, many of their stars will have to make the tiring trips abroad to represent their countries as European qualifying for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa gets underway this weekend.

Celtic and stand in Scotland captain Stephen McManus along with Gary Caldwell, Paul Hartley, Scott Brown, Barry Robson and Shaun Maloney have all been included in George Burley’s squad for the matches against FYR Macedonia in Skopje and Iceland in Reykjavík. All players will harbour realistic ambitions of starting at least one of matches in a bid to get Scotland off to the perfect start as they try and qualify for their first major championship since the 1998 World Cup in...
