McCarthy follows Irish roots
Hamilton midfielder James McCarthy has decided his international future lies with the Republic of Ireland.
The Glasgow-born 17-year-old qualifies for the Republic through his Donegal-born grandfather and has represented the country at under-17, under-18 and under-21 level.
The Scottish Football Association were hoping to persuade him to switch his allegiance to the country of his birth.
However, McCarthy told the Scottish Sun: 'I'm really flattered that Scotland were interested in me.
'It's a huge compliment. The fact is I'd already made my decision.
'Ireland have been absolutely brilliant to me and my family and I couldn't turn my back on them.
'I felt that if I had done that I would have embarrassed myself.
'All I want to do is play football - I don't want to embarrass myself by chopping and changing countries.'

Ah well, SFA's fuckin fault. If they showed interest soon enough this wouldn't have happened.
Can't blame the guy too much, he would look insincere to both countries by chopping and changing like that. He had to stay with Ireland.
Let's just hope when we produce another player (hopefully in the next 10 years) with some of Europes biggest clubs clammering over him, they spot him earlier.
This is just about the last generation in Glasgow with Irish grandparents though, so maybe the completely useless SFA won't have to.
At least we have 'young' lads like David Clarkson coming up, International team of the future is sorted.

Raging. I hope he remembers to hand in his passport and surrender his citizenship on his next flight. I love that - take the privilages of citizenship of the then dont play for the team. Thats all take and no give IMO. Whats the point in being a citizen of a country then? Countries are meant to be more than just a labour exchange and an address to live at. It simply should not be allowed. The granny rule must be scrapped. I wouldnt do it myself but I totally understand the hecklers and simply would not be able to reprimand them because I know how they feel.

Is it though? Who worth their salt would go running to another country because they are overlooked when they are in their mid teens. Anyone who is any sort of sense of duty would hold on till they are at least 20 or so and put out a come and get me call a few times first (Like Ray Houghton has the decency to do). I am so angry with this. Fuck it I am saying no more or I wont be able to remain civil.

So is it OK to say McGeady and McCarthy are not true Scotsmen. Thats exactly what the bigots want and its been put on a plate for them: two catholic Scots with Irish blood dump Scotland to play for Ireland.
(I know I said I would say no more)

If they consider themselves more Irish than Scottish, what is it to you or me? Its their choice and they have rebuffed all attempts to persuade them otherwise. Who gives a fuck what bigots think.
PLenty of good players have turned down Ireland to play for other countries but they dont cost me a thought, its their choice and I dont want any player thats there with doubts and 2nd thoughs.

Who says he "went running to another country"?? Ireland offered him the chance to play international football at junior level. Scotland did not. Ireland recognised his talent at an early age. Scotland did not. Ireland looked after him throughout, why turn his back on them just because Scotland decide they are now interested?

I'm on the same page with you on this kind of thing Keltoi, I always agree with your posts on this topic I know for a fact that despite being eligible for the granny rule myself, I wouldn't allow myself to be poached as a teenager (they are being approached, I think it was Bonner who approached Mcgeady) for Ireland.
I would hold out until it was obvious that I wasn't going to be picked by my country (as in the case of a Englishman, knowing he realistically will never make the english team ever).
I'm saying (it shouldnt be the case that they have to) but with this kind of thing happening, if you have the boy playing in the scotland teams from an early age, its unlikely he would switch. But the Scotland scouts dont often look outwith the old firm - The boy was playing first team football ffs.
This shit infuriates me, trust me. In recent years I've found it harder to watch Scotland, having to endure Gary Teale while thinking what a team we would be with another gifted technical player in our starting 11 (i.e. Mcgeady).
This thing will happen again and again imo, and the treatment McCarthy and Mcgeady will recieve (especially at this Celtic cup thing - Scotland vs. Ireland) will only perpetuate this "proddy country" "booing catholic/celtic players etc" attitude, and persuade some youngster with a copied rebel tape and a postcard from Donnegal to ditch Scotland.
I wouldnt care if the boy was pish, just annoys me that we have a Scotland team of grafters with a bit of technique here and there and we are 1 or 2 players away from a decent side that could cause upsets, and McCarthy and Mcgeady could have been them.
The rule is fucking nonsense, parents are fine, but grandparents no.
