If it makes you feel better we (Japan) stole an U20 Irishman as well.

I blame Thatcher. She imported all this American style cult of the individual against a more socialist sense of community and duty in this country.

That completely ignores the example I already gave... in a country that's more socialist than socialists could dream of.

no matter how you dress it, its self interest against a sense of duty to represent your own community/country. Your country has given you a lot and a lot of folk had to think of others and sacrifice to achieve that level of civilisation. Give what people have done to give you the freedoms is it too much to ask that you represent the country that has sustained you rather than pick and choose to suite yourself. Its not 'all about me'.

Wait... I thought all Americas were Imperialist patriotic fanatics...
Will people from other countries make up their minds on what negative America is?

If you identify more with a different country, no. I've been a US Citizen my whole life, and have no ancestor connection to Japan at all -- but if I was an international footballer and could choose between the 2 -- I'd play for Japan without any second thoughts.
You might say that's selfish, but I just don't feel American. I don't identify with the country at all.
Chong Tese was born, raised, and still lives in Japan. He has South Korean citizenship... but he doesn't identify with either of them.

Yea, but Rossi is just a wee prick. Being Italy it's also hard to gauge if that was a career decision or that he was raised Italian ... but I don't know much about him.

lol. Yep you guys are getting it tight here. BTW, as I posted before I like a lot about Americans compared to the UK and its only the politics and foreign policy that lets you down. There are a number of things that makes you lot seem a bit strange from over here :.
1. The horror of the big bogy man 'big government' etc But as soon as the money men in the city gamble away the world economy where do they go running to save things - the central government and expect the peoples money to be used. Its all dogma. All the western economies use government and public money and protectionism when the sacred free market fails. Hopefully this myth about the free market has been broken in the last few months.
2. Why do the working classes/lower middle classes not have a party pushing for European style free medicine etc?
3. Do people with money feel bulletproof? The reason people pay big tax in Europe is for a good safety net and most people accept that because you know from your own famililys story that things can and will go wrong like illness, getting old, loss of jobs etc.
4. In the UK and Europe most Christians are on the (soft) left which TBH makes a lot more sense if you read the new testament. So the right wing christian thing seems very weird. .
Its a shame the US cant go back to being a rich but self contained isolationist country of pre-WWII. People really admired America then and it was clearly the best place to live but not taking on board the democratic socialist stuff like welfare state etc that came about in Europe means I would never trade passports.

Dead on. Unfortunately, I assure you the situation has not made a dent. Calling yourself a socialist is a surefire way to never get elected to office.

Because of #1 -- state medical = socialism = death to the God Free Market. You wouldn't believe the lengths people in America go to claim that the treatment you guys get is worse than being in Africa. It's very much demonized.

All we've got over here is the right and the ultra right. I personally blame it on the real-life " joe six packs" and the media. Just look up some articles talking about the debate last night... the entire thing will be stuff like " did Obama smile enough?" The Vice President debates were even worse. You get articles saying Sarah Palin " accomplished her mission" because she was able to speak coherently. Seriously, our elections are down to who the voters want to have a beer with. I'm not even going over the top on this... this is really how it is. It is terrible. I hate it.
It's not a good sign when your hardest-hitting news on politics is a comedy show that comes on after puppets doing prank telephone calls.

That was temporary and mostly only because of the depression where there wasn't any time to really be outright racist and assholes. Pre-WWI we were world-class dicks. Post-WWII we just resumed where we left off.
Instead of royally dicking up Asia in the pursuit of easily-exploited free markets and oil... we went in pursuit of royally dicking up the Middle East. Of course, dicking up Central America has always been a pastime. Even older than baseball.

Most of our grandparents fought in the two world wars for our country, which is the ultimate sacrifice. You dont do that is you feel total disconnect from the country. I think most of the real anti-UK aspect among Scottish catholic culture is a modern add-on and was imported from the 1960s onwards from northern Ireland during the troubles. Older Scots catholics of earlier generations (pensioners now) dont seem to have this stuff in their heads and their main sense of difference was religion not nationalistic politics.
Bottom line is when you reach adulthood you are expected to be an adult not a romantic dreamer and you should play for the country that has supported you throughout your childhood, not the one of ancestral romantic fancy that you have possibly barely seen (bar the odd holiday maybe) and who have had no real practical role in supporting you. You owe it. You are you You are not your grandparents. It may be chicken and egg but to not play for their country, these guys have fed the myth that the Scots of catholic religion are suspect and not 'real' Scots with real loyalty is to Ireland and have done harm to integration. It takes two to tango. You need the locals to accept you and you yourself need to fully embrace your new country. If neither happens it is more difficult.
No country ever will be happy with people who dont integrate at least to a degree where their first practical (not romantic) loyalty is to the country that supports them and have given them everything. The catholic Irish are not too fond of the protestant people in the north of Ireland whose first loyalty is to Britain and have failed to integrate, so why would Scots be any different when it comes to their minority. Some level of loyalty to the country you live in is expected. The worse thing you can do if the locals are not too accepting of you is to reject your country. That screws everything and just plays right into the bigots hands.

Oh and no I didnt. I blamed Thatcher for encouraging people to care about no.1 and not about the wider community of citizens they live with.
