Exactly. It even happens in Japan -- where players' parents came to Japan as refugees in the late 40s and 50s, born in Japan, lived their whole life in Japan... but opt to not play for Japan. A few people make it into a big deal, but it's really not.
Chong Tese, for example, is the star of North Koreas' team and has a DPRK passport while being a South Korean citizen and living his entire life in Japan. (pay attention movie-makers... this is prime material for double spy action flics )
Note he plays for a country that considers it fun times to launch missiles over the country he grew up in and technically at war with the country he's a citizen of -- but it gets less attention than McGeady.
Nor does he get any flak playing for Kawasaki Frontale every week.

To be fair, I don't think Marcus Tanaka would have made the Brazilian or Italian (also eligible) NTs.

Definitely -- just saying, there really isn't anything for Brazilians to be jealous over.
Though recently a Japanese-Peruvian turned down Perus' manager because he'd eventually like to play for Japan. Last I heard JLeague clubs were fending eachother off with sticks in a race to sign him. I don't think anybody in Japan knew he existed until the article came out.

It's bad enough having to read and listen to the media calling McGeady 'the young Irishman'. He's not Irish and never will be and he'd be the first to tell you that, he's a Scotsman that chose to play football for Ireland....same as McCarthy.

I am amazed at the uselessness of the Scotland set up not getting in early but personally I wouldnt have considered another country until I was well into my 20s and it was clear I wasnt wanted by my own. Ray Houghton waited until he was say 24 and still wasnt wanted (he issued a couple of come and get me warnings to Scotland in his early 20s) and he has my total respect. He was just unlucky that in the mid-late 80s Scotland had better players than him.

Its not like hopping around for a mobile phone. Its about duty to your country.

The same Liverpool who bought Andriy Voronin....
Again, just because teams want him, doesn't mean he is a class act, but obviously at 17 he could become one, don't get me wrong, but just because he is in the first team for Hamilton at 17, doesn't make him a star.
|
This is a very flawed argument... Also, just because Voronin and Shevchenko didn't make it in the premier league doesn't mean they are bad players. If you are arguing that they are bad players then... I just can't answer that.
Just because they've made bad signings doesn't mean they don't know talent... ok some didn't work out but that happens on every team. You seem to be arguing that just because Chelsea, Liverpool, Celtic and Rangers are after him that he's a bad player... that's just mind boggling.
And none of the players you mentioned are youth players.

My point is, just because those teams are interested doesn't mean he's a star in the making.
he could be the next Filip Sebo or he could be the next Zinedine Zidane, I haven't seen anything from him to suggest he is going to be a star.

You should read more of the posts.
Seriously... it's a sport, there is no "duty" here. And it's rather presumptuous to assume what is in a persons' heart.
If I, and everyone else, can get over a good forward that scores goals against us playing for a "country" that lobs missiles over my preferred country... McGeadygate is nothing.
If it makes you feel better we (Japan) stole an U20 Irishman as well.
