And the Liverpool coaches apparently said during his trial that he was better than Gerrard at that age.

2 Appearances my arse, Middlesbrough, Newcastle, Portsmouth, and a few friendlies....

fact is, he is in the first team squad, every week, albeit on the bench, but it still says a lot that he is chosen to be part of the squad.

There is plenty of young guys at united, who are far better than McCarthy, The lad is overrated by the scottish media, its only natural, when they see a 17 year old playing regularly for an SPL side, doesn't mean he's a world beater.

Danny Welbeck is 17, he's usually on the bench for united, I'd much rather be on the bench for united at 17, than playing for hamilton accies at 17.

And if you think Theo Walcott is shit, then I'm gobsmacked, the lad is quality, lacks end product at times, but he can change a game all by himself.

and he's not overrated because of his hat trick, because he clearly done something right to get in the england squad in the first place.

Lee martin, dong fanzhou (sp?) and liam miller all got on the bench for man utd , where are they now eh?

SO it means pretty much fuck all in my opinion if they don't get subbed on.

Not really, he has fucked up many many chances for arsenal when he has played, he looks like miller to me , all running nothing at the end of it.

And it just seems to me that you can't take that Man utd didn't find this guy first, and that liverpool want him.

And when you say the scottish media over hype him please give me some proof where they say he is world class or anything near that, that wasn't a quote from a player or manager.

Mate, your one of the posters on here i really like, but i think that comment is just so stupid.

as if he is ever going to replace Paul Scholes or Michael Carrick, and i know scholes is old now, but that's why we have Anderson, who at 20 is a great prospect.

Pele said Anderson at 20 is better than Ronaldo at 20, and that Anderson is better than Ronaldo was when he first signed for United, so why would i want McCarthy ?

I think the lad is a good player ( McCarthy ) don't get me wrong, but i think the SPL is his level, Obviously at 17, nobody can tell how good he will be, but atm, i don't see anything to suggest in 10 years time, he is going to be a world class player.

and back on the possebon thing, watching him, he actually looks a player, Dong lol, he was just signed for Marketing reasons, Miller was found wanting at that level, and Lee Martin became shite when he went to rangers.

Pele has called at least 20 different players, including Freddy Adu, the "future Pele." I love the guy to death but he often is a little flattering in his descriptions of players. I'd imagine that being a fellow Brazilian encourages this even more.

Honestly, I think both of you are underestimating how good the other is. MuttCutts, I don't know how in the world you can in any way state what a player's future level will be when he's only 17. If you can, you should be making millions as a scout, not posting on a football forum.

So you could say Man utd have a potential class player

Nice to know you watch hamilton training.

Theres a reason why chelsea liverpool Celtic rangers Arsenal have all offered trials, and most have had bids of over £1.5 million turned down for him.

Yes, this would be the same Celtic who bought Chris Killen.

The same Rangers who bought Filip Sebo.

The same Chelsea who bought Andriy Shevchenko for 30 million.

the same Arsenal who bought William Gallas, a guy who cries when his team give away penalties, and then refuses to leave the field of play at Full Time.

The same Liverpool who bought Andriy Voronin....

Again, just because teams want him, doesn't mean he is a class act, but obviously at 17 he could become one, don't get me wrong, but just because he is in the first team for Hamilton at 17, doesn't make him a star.

You could, but I'm sure even McCarthy's da would tell you that he isn't in the same class as any you mentioned, but probably in the same class as some that i mentioned like Voronin, Sebo and Killen.

You're the same with McGeady though Keltoi.

Choosing to play football for Ireland instead of Scotland isn't a slight on anyone's country. It just means you chose to play football for Ireland. It's a sport not a nationality transfer scheme.

It's bad enough having to read and listen to the media calling McGeady 'the young Irishman'. He's not Irish and never will be and he'd be the first to tell you that, he's a Scotsman that chose to play football for Ireland....same as McCarthy.

Great post, and I've never really got what the big fuss is about.
Getting nitpicky over what country a player chooses to represent is the attitude I'd expect from others...

I didn't mean the thread to turn to one of these. But, you have to understand peoples frustration. Once in a blue moon scotland produce a player geniunely capable of playing a level higher than the SPL, and on those rarities (also with Mcgeady) they choose to play for a country who played no part in their development - Then we're left with the rest of our mediocre 22 year old 'prospects' floating around our pish league.

It was his grandda's dying wish that he'd play for the republic, so unless that was exagerated by the press or whatever, then I really can't see him changing.

McGeady played underage football for Ireland so it's not fair to say Ireland played no part in his footballing development.
