No sanctions over anthem " abuse "
Thu 21 Aug, 11:09 AM
Scotland will not face any sanctions from UEFA after Northern Ireland's national anthem was booed and jeered by the Tartan Army before last night's goalless friendly at Hampden.
The home fans ignored earlier pleas from the Scottish Football Association to treat 'God Save the Queen' with respect.
UEFA spokesman William Gaillard said that while the game was outside their jurisdiction, there was nothing in their rules which could be used to punish disrespect of that nature.
He said: "Friendly matches are in the domain of FIFA, it is not UEFA's responsibility.
"Unfortunately this is not a new thing but there are no sanctions we can impose.
"We ran a successful campaign during the European Championships to get fans to respect their opponents' national anthems.
"It's about education and we can only hope that respect is shown."
After the game, attended by 7000 Northern Ireland fans in a crowd of over 28,000, the SFA issued a statement claiming it was "disappointed" in the actions of a section of the Scotland support.
The statement read: "The SFA is obviously disappointed that a minority of of our fans chose not to respect the visitors' national anthem.
"The Tartan Army have a richly-deserved reputation as fantastic ambassadors for their country.
"We do not condone this kind of behaviour."
Are you an anthem " abuser " ??? ............. I'm guilty as charged

sanctions for what? far too many crybabys in football these days. this PC brigade should be banned from every ground.
it's football, a game of emotions joy and sadness. I can't wait till I get banned from a ground because I shouted "the ref is a cunt".
Excellent work my scottish friends! great, greater, the tartan army once again!

It's pretty obvious which way NI supporters lean. I mean Scotland don't have to sing GSTQ so why do they? Because they're Unionists.
This is why there will never be a united Irish team, and to be honest I don't want those filthy cunts standing next to me in the terraces anyway.

This is bullshit. During the MLS All-Star game the Canadians (it was played in Toronto) booed during the last half of God Save the Queen and the ENTIRE Star Spangled Banner, and I quote, "because they thought MLS had forgotten to play O Canada." This makes me want to see the US Nats crush the Canadians, but I'm hardly running to FIFA for sectarian abuse. It's not as if they are singing about something violent, they are just jeering. Classless? Maybe. Harmful? Definitely not. I am against people booing national anthems (although I realize you all have more reason to hate God Save the Queen more than I do, we kicked the British out of our country ourselves ) but they are acting like little children on the school ground after somebody made a joke about their sexual orientation or something like that.
For a group that seriously debated bringing back the Billy Boys song (I think Rangers supporters care much more than the English in this regard actually) they are acting like a bunch of bitches.

I have to agree, we showed our class that day at Croker. Didn't Brian Moore say something in commentary like 'I've got a lump in my throat after that' after we all applauded? Great stuff.
It's not worth booing. But I can understand why the Scots would boo it so I'm not going to critisice.
