CELTIC CHASE GERMAN STAR

WANTED: Kevin Prince Boateng

Saturday August 30,2008

By Andy McInnes

Celtic are set to make a last-gasp swoop for German Under 21 central midfielder Kevin Prince Boateng.

With the transfer window due to slam shut on Monday Hoops boss Gordon Strachan has targeted the out of favour Spurs player who cost £5m last year for a season-long loan deal with a view to a permanent arrangement.

The move came just 24 hours after Strachan learned he would have to face euro champs Manchester Utd , Spanish side Villarreal and Aalborg of Denmark in a tough Champions League Group.

Celtic and Strachan realise they must beef up their side for the euro campaign with the supporters still demanding a ‘’ maverick ‘’ signing that will give them an extra edge in the top arena.

Nicknamed the ‘’Ghetto kid ‘’ as he grew up in a poor district of Berlin, Boateng who has dual German-Ghanain nationality was tipped to be a superstar of the future when he switched from local club Hertha to White Hart Lane last July.

The 21 year old seemed to lose his way however in the move to London and after his first Premiership start against Midlesbrough in November a series of bland and dismal displays saw him consigned to the reserves for the rest of the season.

Strachan however has never forgotten the powerfull player who shot to fame with a spectacular 45 yard goal for Germany against Greece in the the UEFA European under-19 Championships.

He has already studied a full dossier on Boateng who identifies Pele and Rivaldo as his role models and is ready to open negotiations with Tottenham and the player over the next 24 hours.

Former Spurs manager Martin Jol who signed Boateng compared him with Aaron Lennon adding: ’’ He is a very strong attacking midfielder for the future who is regarded as one of the biggest talents to come out of Germany.

why? a one season loan just doesnt make sense, is he a lefty are we trying to convert him into left back?

I know Strachan has a hardon for midfielders but this move would not make sense with our current options.

Don't see this one happening at all. Can't see us signing another midfielder. If we do sign someone, which is looking doubtful, it'll be a left back or striker.

he is a quality midfielder i saw him play for when he was at hertha berlin and he has a good shot on him and also good range of passing he is only young aswell so he can come in if brown is not cutting it and in future could maybe forge partnership with crosas
