Celtic in hunt for Loovens

CELTIC today cranked up their hunt for new defenders with just over two weeks until they have to register their squad for the Champions League.
Cardiff's Glenn Loovens is the latest player to be added to the Parkhead club's list of possibles, though sources at Parkhead today made it clear he is far from their only target. Reports from Wales claim that an offer - believed to be from Celtic - of around £1.5million was received at Ninian Park last week.
But the Premiership hopefuls have already repelled a couple of advances from Rangers for Loovens, and are holding out for £2.5m, even though he is out of contract at the end of this season and is refusing to accept a new deal.
The 24-year-old Dutchman impressed against Celtic in the Algarve, and the price would not frighten them off as they were prepared to pay £3.7m for Auxerre's Gabriel Tamas before the Parkhead club finally ended protracted negotiations for the Romanian.

Le Mans' centre-back Marko Bassa was also wanted, and he would have cost over £4m. But he is set to sign a lucrative four-year deal with Lokomotiv Moscow.
Celtic have been forced to look further down their list for the centre-back manager Gordon Strachan believes he needs to add to his squad ahead of another European campaign. And, at 6ft 2in, former Feyenoord star Loovens is the kind of ball-playing defender who ticks all the boxes.
With midfielder Marc Crosas, striker Georgios Samaras and wide player Paddy McCourt already in, a left-back is still a priority.
Attempts to sign an attacking midfielder are also continuing behind the scenes.
Celtic are still trying to get Bobo Balde's wages off their books, while Thomas Gravesen is another high earner they would like to shed.
With a combined drain on resources of nearly £70,000 per week, removing Gravesen and Balde - neither of whom figured in last night's reserve win over St Mirren - from the wage bill would make it significantly easier for Celtic to recruit new talent.
But, though it would swell his spending power, Strachan would repel any attempts to lure away any of his first-choice players, including Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink, a reported target for Hamburg.
