You are right in saying that Batman was not serious but Heath Ledger is by far the best at playing the Joker. Even though he was a funny(strange) character the Joker was never meant to be homourous or slapstick in the way that some actors have potrayed him. The Joker was always meant to be sinister and twisted - that why Ledger has been so highly praised.

So which actors are you reffering to. Is it Jack Nicholson by any chance? If it is you're completely wrong. Sinister, twisted, humorous and evil are the way I'd describe Joker Jack.
