Price wars are pretty fictional to be honest mate, price fixing however is endemic among the major chains and they've been caught a few times. The bargains you think you're getting are offset by the profits on other items the majors fix the price of.
Regarding the credit crisis, it's actually helping the company I work for as more and more UK and European clients are coming to us as our labour costs are far cheaper than the UK, plus (and this is fact) in general UK and European companies are pretty lazy. I've had clients telling me they've waited up to a month from UK companies to even quote them on stuff I make sure comes back to the client within 48hrs. Our order book is full to the point we're now interviewing for 4 new welders and a mechanical engineer.
I honestly don't have any sympathy for companies who are slack with their clients and then sit back and moan because they don't get enough orders. There's plenty of contracts floating about in my line of work but if you don't go out and fight for them they'll not drop on your lap. We've increased our UK market share by 3% in the last 4 months and out EU market share by 7%. Not bad for a company only employing 60 odd people.
