Crime/safety debate in your area/city
the current knife debate made me think a lot. I live in switzerland in a small village. there are some fights from time to time, but nothing serious. last year, we had one murder in the whole state.
as you might know is Zürich our biggest city. people in my village always told me how things were rough in Zürich. how many drug dealers, rapists, murderers and even the yeti were living there. I used to feel very uncomfortable when I got there.
over the years I have been many times to Zürich for football (away) games, concerts, airport, clubs, discos etc and altough it's a completely different world compared to my village, I have never seen anything bad at all and lucky never experienced a crime either.
just read Zürich is always in the top 3 when it comes to safety and living standard worldwide. How come I ask myself, when we consider Zürich as wild wild west of switzerland?
I also love travelling and I have been to various cities and places. I never felt unsafe in Glasgow, London, Birmingham etc, in fact I always enjoyed the time and thought especially Glasgow was "lovely". the city has it's own peculiar charm and it really fascinates me. although it's supposed to be probably the most violent & dangerous city in Europe!
let's come to my point of this thread: I have been to many cities worldwide and never had any problems at all. the people from each country were very friendly and helpful all the time.
but when I have a look at worldwide news, there are slaughterings, stabbings, murders everywhere all the time.
I believe there happen various bad things every day in every city, but compared to the huge population numbers it's a very weee part.
to go the extra mile -> I believe in this old saying: Nothing is as bad as it looks.
What about you, my appreciated users, what do you think about this? have you ever experienced any violent acts or crimes? do you feel safe in your city/area? do you also think it's not as bad as it seems in the media all the time?

You are more likely to be injured driving to work every day than you are of being stabbed. The media tends to concentrate on a news story and so it will seem that everywhere there is a major problem. Take for instance when they concentrated on dogs biting people. They are still out there doing it but the media have moved on to stabbings at the moment and it will be something else tomorrow.
If your time is up, then it is up so make the most of each day while you can and no need to worry about stuff until/unless it happens to you or your immediate friends and familly

Like I just posted in another thread, Glasgow has never been the murder or crime capital of Europe. It’s some bullshite the Scottish media dreamt up 10 years ago and ever since Glasgow has been the murder capital every year for 10 years according to them.
I post on another forum, not football related, and there was a discussion about murders and general crime in Europe. Guess what.... Glasgow has NEVER been the murder or crime capital of Europe, Glasgow has never been in the top 10!!!
The media in Scotland love to portray Glasgow as some rough city where if you walk the streets there is a 90% chance you will be killed. Yet at the same time they live to paint an image of Edinburgh as the little friendly place where nothing bad has ever happened and never will happen.
In reality, both couldn’t be further from the truth.

I feel 100% safe in Glasgow, never once have I felt not safe.
The only cities I have ever felt unsafe or uneasy in are Miami and Santo Domingo.
I have personally been attacked twice, both by complete strangers for absolutely no reason.... guess what, both took place in that place in Scotland where nothing bad ever happens..... Edinburgh!

I've lived and visited some of the so called roughest places in the UK and never been attacked.
I was brought up on a tough scheme in Pollok, Nitshill. I also lived in Priesthill during my teens to early twenties and after a few years away returned. Never any bother.
I lived in Erdington in Birmingham and used to drink in Handsworth and Balsall Heath. Nae bother.
I lived in St.Paul's in Bristol for a few months and still no trouble. I spent 6 years in Toxteth in Liverpool, not a jot of trouble.
Why is it these places are supposed to be scary?
Beats me.

Lived all over Glasgow for many years and never had a problem. However I lived in Cathcart for 5 years until 2002, then I left Glasgow altogether, I felt un-easier over the period while in Cathcart. It seemed to be a local Ned problem basically drunken idiots, over a period of time they got more and more out of control and began to cause havoc in the area. Bricks, pellets, bottles of urine thrown through folk’s windows, the worst I ever experienced was one night watching a CPL game on the box, all of a sudden a laser was aimed at my head. Not embarrassed to say it but it scared me shitless.
Since I have moved out here all you see on Sky/BBC news is a steady decline all over the U.K. of similar/worse incidents to what was going on around my home 6 years ago. Not too sure if it’s any worse than it was or it is just highlighted more within the media, either way it is unacceptable. It´s happening, just because you may not have been personally touched by violent crime doesn’t mean many others haven’t.
From my viewpoint away from the U.K. it seems their has been a rapid decline in culture within the U.K. in general. We have had many discussions on here regards to immigration, youth and economic values. all of these subjects have linked to why we may be Seeing, such an increase in violent crime IMO.

No, I dont feel safe. In the past 2 years there has been 3 attempted murders in my own street, all men, all related to drugs and I have been unfortunate enough to witness one.
